Here's the thing - this past Monday, I learned to make rag rugs from MaryJane and Meg and Katy. It was so much fun - I ripped a sheet into strips and made a rug like there was no tomorrow.
On Wednesday I went to my local Goodwill to buy more sheets (at about 2.99 each) to rip apart and make more rugs. Well, I got those sheets home......
They were pretty, and made from non-wrinkle percale, and there was not a spot on them. How on earth can I rip them apart? No way!
Now I have a couple of new beautiful sheets for my guest room bed. As you all know, new sheets cost a fortune!!!! And they wrinkle like crazy!!!! But not my Goodwill sheets. Rugs will have to wait!!
But I love my new sheets!

omg, there are so many sheets at our Salvation Army. And I have at least four here that I'm 'saving' for a bookbag/grocery bag project. You gals should be able to find more sheets -- every garage sale and thrift store I go to has them! Maybe I'll have to add 'rag rug' to my list of projects!

nitere - there are no sheets at the thrift stores in Atlanta because Karin had to buy them all to give us sheets to rip! :)
Kay, yes, I will post a picture of my rug when I have it the size I want it - or a photo of Julia's because she is going faster than me - she found a pretty yellow sheet to add to her patterned one....anyway, we will post a photo soon!
OKay, I will go back to goodwill and buy one that I would not want for the beds!
Oh, and Karin, I know what you mean about throwing it on the floor! That cracked me up.

Ladies- For those of you who haven't been able to go to one of these lovely crafting sessions to learn how to make a rag rug from MaryJane in person, you can learn from her in "MaryJane's Stitching Room" book pages 56-59.
To make a braided rag rug, you braid the strips of rags together adding on strips as you go. Once you have a length you make a coil, flat for a thinner rug, on it's side for a thick rug. Then you take quilting thread (you want the strength) and whip stitch every inch or so to secure the braids together! At least this is how my great grandmother made them. She continued making these rugs until she passed away, even when she lost her sight. I really wish I still had some of her rugs. They were beautiful!

Oh Jeannie -- I wouldn't have been able to rip them either! I have this thing about vintage percale sheets and pillowcases -- another addiction of mine! If they were frayed or a little thing then maybe but not if they're in perfect condition. Can we see the rug??

If it makes you feel any better, I just tore two Ralph Lauren sheets into strips for my rug. And I did not feel one bit guilty. :)
Mine is coming along nicely. It would probably go faster if I did not keep throwing it on the floor to step on it. It's so lovely and cushy and soft.
Amy- I am off with Cilla to the thrift stores tomorrow. I'll see what I can find. Just let me know what colors you are in need of. I may have some here already. (Up on the roof of the back porch. ha ha)

Ah Jeannie Girl!! There'll be plenty of Sheets to be found for our rugs ..
Hang on to those for the beds.. We don't always come across thos great buys!!
How far have you come on you rug? Mine is still the same size as when i left Karin's.(Boo Hoo!)
BUT.. I have an Excuse.. i have been working non stop Overtime since I got back home!
But as soon as this week end rolld around.. I'll be up at the Thrift stores too looking for more Sheets!!!

My mother used to make these only she used nylons somehow. and she braided them. I have no clue how one goes about it. I suppose I could research it, huh? Now you know why elderly have rooms full of stuff that everyone wonders, "Why did she keep that?"

lol girlz your soooo funny just rip the sheets that is the purpose you bought them for so no second thoughts or you'll get yourself into a dilema and then do what you gals have done. trust me i have done the same thing but if you take quick action and turn your brain off you can do it.

yes!!!yes!!!yes!!! see i finished with what i got at karin's, found the perfect sheet to finish with at salvation army...$1.99.....i cannot cut it up and i really want to finish this rug!!! |

I know what you mean, its hard to rip into good material. Guess you will have to be on the lookout for older sheets that you don't get attached to.
