I was cutting out diapers for Nora yesterday. I forgot to take into account the fact that my pattern size was folded, so instead of cutting squares I cut rectangles! Oops! So now I have to sew two rectangles together to make the diapers! I thought the pile of fabric was looking a bit skinny when I was cutting it, but I though- Naw- I measured and have a guide to cut by! LOL

Katie, the princess of laundered helpful-ness, told me I was being silly and had a good laugh when lo and behold... I started the dryer without putting the clothes in. She had run back up stairs to get her stool. I took out the shirts hung them up and started the dryer. She goes to fill the soap cup (the water is started already)and dump it in. Giggles erupting from the washer is not what one expects when getting ready to throw in the next load. I had to look in the dryer, I couldn't believe I did it. My DH's work clothes were REALLY clean!

Tracey- Yes, please post the link. I am fine with doing the contoured diapers- and you are right- they don't take too very long, but then again I can do a flat fold in about 5 minutes so that is what I have been doing, but I have a feeling that as she starts crawling more and walking, she will prefer the contoured ones.

Alee and Shawna, I am right there with you having "mom brain"!!

Alee, that is awesome that you make your flat folds! My friend that recommended the Rita's Rump Pocket diaper stuffs her pockets with flats. I just use the prefolds I already have for nighttime. If you were wanting to try a few of these pockets, it would be worth the time. They are just 2 layers of flannel (recommended but you can use other fabrics). Pretty easy to sew, I promise!! Only takes aobut 30 miutes from start to finish (if babies are napping and other children are playing nicely). I made a few modifications to the pattern because I learned to sew a certain way and it is quicker for me. Here is the link for the pattern. Don't let it intimidate.... there are sites that show them as an all in one, with snaps, aplix, etc BUT the original is just 2 layers of flannel, elastic legs and pins hold it in place for a really nice fit.

My Andrew has one on that has velour on the inside. YUMMY soft!

If you want to try a couple and want to work a trade or something let me know. Or, be brave and go try one today!! You can do it, promise!! I put the elastic on first (not the casing or other method mentioned in the pattern), zigzagged and then pin the dipe together and sew, pulling the elastic fabric taught to fit the other side. Also, I trace the 2 pieces, right sides together, only one tracing and cut out. I pin the top and bottom, then work carefully between the pins so everything stays together and I don't have to try to fit it all back after the fact. Hope that is clear as mud but it makes the operation run smoothly for me!

Gotta run for the day but will check in to see if you went for it when I return ;).

Shawna, you really should try cloth! I have enough that I only wash every 3 or so days but my Andrew is 18 months so usage is different. YOu would need some covers also. You can use fleece (2 layers if not very thick), wool, or various other products that are on the market. Like I said, I gotta run but will check back in. I love encouraging and helping moms get started on the cloth journey. It is wonderful!!

Hi Shawna!

5 Weeks! Oh My! He is such a little dear! Now would be a perfect time for a sling! It would probably make your life so much easier!

Nora was born on 3/22 this year.

Once I cut out a diaper it just takes a few minutes to hem it using the sewing machine, and to be honest, I have had a few that I needed _right__then_ so I used them unhemmed! LOL They didn't unravel too badly actually. Each time I washed them I just snapped off the dangling threads. The cloth diapers have been so nice for us. Doug, my husband, was dubious at first. But now he actually recommends them to people!! He says people give him weird looks, but we know the truth! They end up being so much cheaper and really- much easier. And our house _never_ smells like dirty diapers because we have to wash them each day. We know a couple of people that you can always tell when the garbage needs taken out because their house starts smelling like- well- old stinky diapers! Ick!

Shawna- if you don't have time to make your own diapers, email me and we could work something out. I won't lie- I am a rookie sewer so my sewing skills aren't wonderful yet, but I can hem and they _will_ last you. If you paid for the price of the flannel and shipping and maybe a little extra to cover gas to go get the flannel and ship them, then I could probably get you out a full set over a weekend. I would just have to sit down and do it. Flannel here is around $3 a yard and I can get a couple of diapers out of every yard. Plus I can use the scraps to make you wipes as well if you like.

7, 4 in jan.,2 in nov., 5 wks today! when is your little ones b-day? Oh I so remember the first one. They are all special, but the first one just always seems so, well I can't find the right word. I wish I had more time with each one and nothing else needed done. Just taking the time to look at each one and smell that baby smell! Oh what we miss, doing what needs done. I think you gals are awasome making your own diapers. I just was looking into that idea.

Oh Shawna I can totally relate. They say the forgetful stuff goes away once you give birth... They lie! :D I am still a space cadet! I got a lot of work done with Nora in the Snugli so she could nurse on demand and I could at least get a few things done. It doesn't work for everything but it helped a ton!

How old are your kids again?

Alee- Last wk I was making tuna cass. I was tring to get most if the work done while the noodles boiled. I got all the two handed stuff done, like shredding the cheese and opening the cans. So it was going good, looking like I would get it together before needing to feed the baby again. so I'm feeling good about this. An hour later while hubby is eating it, says it's good, pretty cheesy- so how many cans of tuna did you put in? opps!!! I forgot the Tuna. He just looked at me like I had lost my mind. Told me that he is afraid to leave the kids home alone with me(YES!!!) and feels like I will call him and tell him I had lost the van too. I told him that I was "loosing my mind"!!! Anyway I'm blaming this on lack of sleep!

Hi Tracey-

Actually I just do flat folds. I made a few of the contoured (fitted) diapers before Nora was born and they were HUGE on her when she was born! I used the MammaBird pattern and even newborn size was too big. I might make a few more contoured diapers now that Nora is more mobile, but they take so long to dry that I have a hard time wanting to go through all that work. With the flat folds, they can be folded in so many ways and they last for so long! Her first set of diapers lasted us 6 months, but now they are too small so I am making the "normal" sized ones that should last her another 6 months. Nora was just so tiny when she was born, I had to cut down the size. Her flat folds were only a 22x22 inch square and at first they were huge and I thought too bulky between her legs- Now they hardly cover the necessary parts! LOL

so what pattern are you using? I have always made my own pattern from tracing off what I like and then making subtle changes to the basic shape (longer wings, hidden doubler, external sewn-in doubler, AIO.. ok, you get the idea) but My friend showed me some of her "rita's rump pocket diapers" from a free online pattern and I made 4 of those today. I was never a huge fan of pockets til now. With a walking baby, I like a really good fitting diaper so there is no shifting! Anyway, what do you use? And yes, new, very large wipes are awesome!!

I got a few more diapers done. It looks like I will have plenty of material left to do wipes with, Yeah! New wipes are always nice!

Now my mom would of said, you need to slow down!! She has told me that many times, and lately I have been able to tell her that too. Ha Ha, just when you think your getting something done! Hope the rest of your project goes well.

Alee- You are not alone! We've all done something like that before. Last spring we had a service project at church where we were making valances for a personal care home. I wrote out the directions, laid them on the table (thinking they were pretty clear), and let the women cut the fabric. When I went to check at one table, there were thirty pieces of fabric, 24" long. Apparently when I wrote out "Cut one yard" I neglected to include the vital information that one yard is 36". Oops!! We all had a good laugh and we just stitched the lengths together, just like you are!
