Hi. I am hoping that one of you could post or email me directions on how to crochet granny squares. I once knew how to make them but for the life of me I cannot figure it out. Thanks in advance.
Bright Blessings,
BillieKay

BillieKay-

Here are the instructions that I give to my students.
Abbreviations: sts=stitches; slst=slip stitch; ch=chain; ch sp=chain space; dc=double crochet

Beginning Ring (Color A): Ch 4 and join with sl st to make a ring.

Round 1 (Color A): Ch 3 (this counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring. Ch 3. * 3 dc in ring, ch 3; * Rep from * to * 2 more times. Join with sl st in third ch of first ch 3. You should have four groups of 3 dc and four groups of ch-3 spaces. The ch-3 spaces will make the corners of your square, and the 3-dc will make the sides. Fasten off your yarn.

Round 2 (Color B): Attach new yarn in any corner ch-3 space with slipknot. Ch 3, 2 dc in chain space. Ch 3, 3 dc in same ch-3 corner space. * Ch 1 [this gives you a space between the corners—you’ll use it on the next round]. Work 3 dc, ch 3, in next ch-3 corner space. * Repeat from * to * 2 more times and join together in third ch of first ch 3 with sl st, so that you have worked two 3-dc and one ch-3 into each corner of the square, with a ch-1 space between the corners.

Round 3 (Color C): Attach new yarn in any ch-3 corner space with slipknot. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc all in the same corner space. Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 space to make the side of the square [remember how I said in the last round that you’d use this here? This is it, use it well]. Ch 1. * Work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next corner, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1. * Repeat from * to * 2 more times, and join with sl st in top (third ch) of beginning ch 3.

Repeat round 3 (always working [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] into each corner, and 3 dc into each ch-1 space along the sides) until your square is as big as you want it to be. Adjust color combinations as much as your little heart desires. Rejoice in your ability.

Hope this helps!
Cheers,
kathy

My granny did an endless number of crocheting granny squares in the years before she died. That's all she did, so at the time it was kind of a family joke. She had so many garbage bags full of them, saved away. I have an afghan she made from some of her squares, very bright colors. I treasure it so much! I sure wish I knew what the family did with all those granny squares and wish I had them all, I could share them with all of you!
