I recently acquired a couple packages of Angelina fibers and do not really understand how to use it. I would like to adhere it to a garment and transfer a pattern over it to embroider. Has anyone done that? I understand how to fuse it, but there are no directions on how to attach it to fabric.  I tried using fusable web, but I was unable to transfer a pattern to it because the pattern fused to it. What I am trying to do is use pale blue as a background sky to a "Family Tree" that I will embroider. Any suggestions. |

Hey Shirley,
It's awesome! Love all the detail..a woman after my heart  So, don't you just love the Vilene? The stuff has so many uses.
So glad you shared your creation..would love to see more as you have them ready to show.

I thought you might like to see the finished product. I wish the photo was better, but this gives you an idea of what it looks like. I started with a pull-over sweatshirt, removed the binding and opened the front. The closure on the front is a frog made from the same thread as the leaves and a glass leaf bead. The embroidery is varigated pearl cotton in a satin stitch. The angelina looks like clouds behind the tree.

Rivergirl,
I would think that a tranfer wouldn't fuse to the angelina since it's not it's nature to do that unless you mix in fibers, papers, etc. before you fuse the angelina the first time.
I do know that you can use rubber stamps on warm angelina and emboss the surface with a design so that's something different you can consider in addition to the hand embroidery you are going to do on it.
If it were I....I would tranfer the embroidery design onto the Vilene then baste the Vilene to the garment (over the angelina) or whereever you want to do the embroidery. Simply work your design by working through the vilene and the background surface until the design is completed. Then you can cut away the basting stitches that were holding on the vilene
Once it's completed you will trim away all of the vilene that is not needed and then you will fill you sink with water and immerce your vilene area in the water and gently move around and push up and down and check for any pieces of film that area still attached. This could take a few minutes to several minutes depending on the detailed of the work. One you beleive it's been removed run the piece through another sink of clean water a few times to make sure. It generally works like magic...very quickly and easy!
Now what you will have left is your angelina design with the embroidery surface stitch work. Lay it out to block it and let it dry. Any floss you are planning use should be tested for colorfastness. Soak the skein in some lukewarm water for a few minutes and see if it bleeds. If it does then let change it's water many times to let it bleed out all the way.

Stephanie - thank you so much for your response. Since I am in the middle of my project, I was hoping someone would response as quickly as you have. If I use the Bo-Nash or Misdty Fuse to adhere the Angeline to my fabric, will I be able to iron a transfer over the adhered Angeline without the pattern fusing to it? The water soluable paper sounds like a good idea for what I am trying to do. I am unfamiliar with Vilene and have never seen it at my local stores. Is it only an internet product? I only need about 11 inches for this project. I am trying to combine several craft art techniques to create my sweatshirt jacket. |

So you got the Angelina fibers fused from what I just read?? Ok, so you are using a sky blue angelina for the sky and then using other colors to make the tree?? Not sure I'm following you but we can work through it
If that is the case then you would take each section of your (angelina) design that you have created and either machine stitch or hand stitch it to your garment OR you can use a product like Bo-Nash

As far as the embroidery work you wish to add here are some options to think about..they sound intimidating but they are actually VERY simple to use
These options are water soluble meaning you will baste this over your angelina design and then do your embroidery work THEN when finished you will immerse your garment into a sink of water and the water soluble Paper or Fiber will disappear and all that's left is your beautiful embroidery design showing on top of your angelina design.
The beauty of the water soluble PAPER is that is readily feeds through your inkjet printer if you wish to print out your embroidery design.

This next product is called Vilene. It is another water soluble stabilizer but is more like a lightweight cloth. Very drapable. It can be used exactly the same way as the water soluble paper but not sure how it would feed through a printer. I have used the Vilene with my needlefelting as a foundation and it works like magic!! And it's used extensively in hand embroidery, machine embroidery and other surface designing where NO background fabric is wanted to be seen when finished.
