How much material do you need to measure for a certain number of inches of gathered material? Am I clear? I mean, say I wanted 12" of gathered material, how much would I want to cut to make 12" of gathered fabric?

Lorna -- I thought the same thing! Had an image of us all gathered together, sewing needles in hand . . . .

I usually do 2-3 times depending on the effect you are looking for.

I agree that it's a personal choice for the project you are adding the ruffle to...

If making curtains I use x3 but less for other items..I agree run some samples to see what you like

Your samples can also be of different materials, since a light weight fabric versus a quilter's cotton gathers differently even though they may both be, say, a 2x ratio.

I'd do a mini sample~like take a ft of material and experiment with 1 1/2
2, 2 1/2 , 3. Compare them all and see what suits you. Keep them handy as reference for future projects.

I'm not currently making anything, but I was thinking of adding a gathered ruffle to a skirt I have that I might want to have a bit longer. I'm making a doll bed right now, and I"m sewing a gathered bed skirt to it, and I didn't think of needing more fabric than the circumference when I cut, and now I need to cut a few more inches of fabric! :) I'm going to try the 2x and see how that works for me. Thanks for giving me a starting point. :)

As a long time sewer I have always done 3X. I too have made lots and I do mean lots of dresses for little girls and have always liked them to be extra full. 3X is also what I have used in bridal sewing.

well, thought i would stir the pot here, I am a 1 1/2 person..i make lots and lots of little girl dresses...and i make the skirt part out of 1 1/2 times the finished amount!

Katrina,

Whatcha makin'? Amount of gathers is sort of a personal decision. Sewing books and patterns will often recommend an amount, but you have to like what you end up with. I'm more of a 2x person for curtains and home dec items. Also garments. I'm not a fan of super full. I'd say try Elizabeth's 3x and see how it looks before you sew the ruffle to whatever you are making. If it looks too full, you can always reduce the size of the ruffle and trim the excess. Better to start with too much than too little.

I usually like x3 for pleats, gathering... depends how much fabric you have.
