I'm nervous now. On Monday a reporter is coming to the house to interview me for the local paper. I was cool as a cucumber when she called, but now... Deep breath.

I'm making a quilt to be raffled off for charity. So, the publicity will help me sell tickets. Don't know why on earth I'm suddenly nervous. Maybe because I've never taken a quilting class and when I see what other folks do, wow! Mine are so simple.

Those of you who quilt, I have a question. On a tied quilt, is there a rule of thumb for how long/short the ties should be, or is that just a matter of taste and the over-all effect on the design? I chose a color to blend in with the top, since it is a signature quilt and I didn't want to detract from the signatures. How small can I trim the ties?

Thanks!

We make a difference.

I would have to agree 100%! Giving gives such an awesome satifying feeling. Its because you get giddy and excited that in some way you are touching a life. And there are many people in the world with-out hope and when someone is handed lets say your quilt when they are in struggles that may be the very thing that witnesses to them and gives them hope for the rest of their lives. Its about planting seeds of hope and love and compassion for others. Its about sharing the Love of God through giving. About reaching beyond yourself and making someone feel special.
Its not about giving to get. Its about giving and not expecting to get but to give to give. When you give with a pure heart and not for self, then the joy will be overwhelming and awesome!
God bless you all who have a heart for others,
Mary

You are welcome. I truly wish more people could know how special that feels. Bless your heart, keep going. It doesn't really have to be much, just whats on your heart to whoever it is you give to.
I guess my mom and dad encouraged some of this because when I was a child no-one was ever turned away from our door hungry or in need and my Father was on crutches for over thirty years, raised 11 of us kids, we always had plenty, and we always gave to someone. They wee a real blessing as parents, and I am very thankful.
(He had a bulldozer roll over on him in a logging accident and then an infection sat in while he was searching for his brother that drowned. Then they didn't go to doctor's and after seeing the equipment they had back then I understand why because it is bad enough now days. lol) He never complained that his back hurt but had lost a foot in his 6' 8" height before he died in 1976 at the age of 61. My mom passed away of bronchial cancer in 1979 and we were a farm family, for sure.
Anyway, giving is what Farm Girls, and men do!

Wow, Pauline, you know how to make someone feel good. :) Thank you ALL for the compliments. There was a time in my life when helping hands brought me to tears of thankfulness. Since then, life has been one blessing after another, and I'm so glad to be able to give and help now.

I'm selling the tickets for $5 each. Everyone seems so happy, especially when I tell them I donated my time and materials so it all goes to charity. Like donating a grain of wheat, or planting it and donating a bushel.

We make a difference.

I think your work is excellent and the layout of the quilt looks very nice. After a while, with the work you do, interviews will be a piece of cake. You are right that giving to Charities has an addiction, wonderful feeling, in itself. I would suppose this may be one of the joy's of the Lord that He speaks about when He says that giving to the least of these is as you were giving unto him. The joy you would receive knowing it was unto the Lord would be beyond anything/one could get in this world. That's called the Spirit of Christmas. This shouldn't be only once a year, but all year long. Sorry I get excited for you and other that get that joy so surprisingly over something you took so much time and enjoyment to make.
The loss of feeling when the projects are over that some have is because they literally put themselves into their project with Passion and emotion that isn't contrived but of themselves.
Thank you for being here and bless your heart for the excitement you cause when the Angels danced and sang when your heart did as the Lords in your giving.

Whew! Thanks so much farmgirl friends! You were right, she did make me feel very comfortable. Now I can focus on selling raffle tickets, giving away this huge (90x104) quilt and then sending the $ to charity. I'm going to let the quilt winner choose what charity it all goes to. Hopefully this will make it possible to donate more than I could have done on my own. It has been an enjoyable process.

Thank you all so much! :)

When my daughter did her's for our local news, it was very relaxing and it amazed me how many pictures the photographer took and few they actually used, finding the "right" one of course.
We have been published around the United States since then and will be in a few books coming soon.
We are always grateful when the charity reaches others so we will be of even more help. I am thankful to people like you that do donate your wonderful and much needed hard work.
Frannie, you're the best.
God bless, I will be praying your interveiw goes well.

Thank you farmgals so very much! I'll keep on breathing and I'm sure it will all turn out nicely. Great tips and advice. I'll post a picture once I get it done. Thanks for the reassurance. I see such gorgeous quilts at the fair it seems a bit overwhelming what I don't know yet. Someday I'll make time for taking a class. I'm glad to hear simplicity has fans too.

My little trick/tip is that when I tie a quilt, I put a drop of FrayChek on each knot - keeps the short ends from coming untied.
sunshine Posted - Aug 10 2007 : 5:33:00 PM
there is a type of tying known as crows feet it is actually a type of embroidery stitch but you can space them and they don't show up much. Another way is small French knots they don't show up much either use a super long skinny doll needle and travel between stitches inside the batting. Make sure your threads won't show through fabric as that will look ugly a discreet color one that matches your batting color will hide

It actually has to do with the type of batting you have if your batting has a scrim in it they can be farther apart it it doesn't not mor than 1 to 2 inches with a scrim 3 or 4 inch is ok but 4 is pushing the outer boundaries

do it how it looks good to you. You know what the quilt looks like and the look you are going for.
Good job girl!!!

I was told it was up to the person making the quilt. I did go online but did not find a standard length. I usually do 1 to 2 inches.

i have some on my boys bed, and the dangly ends are about 1" or less...don't sweat it!! Every quilt is special, because a person made it...no matter the complexity!
Huckelberrywine Posted - Aug 10 2007 : 09:13:20 AM
I've got the ties spaced fairly close, no further than 3". The floss/thread said to go no further than 5". But how short can I leave the dangly ends?

We make a difference.
janetinva123 Posted - Aug 10 2007 : 09:09:48 AM
not sure but i thought it had to do with how far apart the ties are to make the quilt stable. Then the ties are just cut.
