OK, so there I was, at the thrift store and what do I spot but a treadle machine and cabinet. They wanted $20, but the machine was VERY rusted and obviously missing many parts; the cabinet had only one of its drawers and that was half-filled with mouse droppings. Still, I am kicking myself for not digging thru my hidden-cash-stash for the $20. PLease tell me I made the right choice!!!

I made my wedding gown on a Singer treadle machine. I also made three attendants gowns and the flower girls gown. That was 30 years ago. I would rather have that than my electric one. I could make that machine hum! Susan |

We have bought a LOT of stuff for the farm thru Craigslist... a travel trailer, wood cookstove, treadle sewing machine, etc... You have to follow it fairly regularly to get the "great" deals... and most stuff goes really fast. But when you find that gem, it makes it all worth while!

I realy want a treadle machine, but I never thought to look on craigs list.
Erin I dont know if I should thank you or curse you yet.
They have 2 in columbus,
one is $125 and looks like it is in beautiful condition... and it is in my neighborhood. http://columbus.craigslist.org/clt/356491365.html
The other one is about 5 miles away, the cabibet looks a little rough, but the detail work is beautiful. I think that one is $100. http://columbus.craigslist.org/clt/361525351.html
So I am going to let fate take over a bit, and if they are still there on Mon when I get back, I will probably get one. I have no idea where I am going to put it, but I kinda have a sewing machine collection going... DH keeps buying me old Machines..
Since I will be in Cleveland this weekend for a show, and my family happens to be there... I checked out clevelands... well it looks like all of the old treadle machines are about $100 more.

Thanks for the support and input! The whole cabinet was not in good shape. I think I'll hold on to my hope that my Aunt may someday release Grandma's machine to me and not one of her daughters...a girl can dream!

Treadles are pretty common still, so I think you made the right decision... You can get one in better shape for not too much more. Check your local craigslist or check your paper for garage sales...

I may have bought it, if I didn't already have one. But the drawers missing would have made it very iffy for me.

If the base was good i would have bought it. i love the old treadle machines I learned to sew on one. I have a bernina 730e with all the bells and whistles but i would dearly love to have an old machine to do quilts on like my grandmother did.

Sharon, I'll go out on a limb and support you on this one. I would not have bought it. If you wanted to use it, you could probably do better. You can get a treadle machine in good working order for $100 and there's no guarantee that you would have been able to restore this one. Unless you really liked the way it looked and you had a spot in the house/garden that it would have filled perfectly, I think you dodged a bullet. Besides, these things weigh a ton when they still have the machine inside. You would have had a terrible time getting it into your car. Hope that helps your non-buyer remorse! |

Yes, i would have bought it too, you just never know...my husbands aunt has several tables in her home that are legs of the machines, finished in different ways and different materials for tops...they are all so unique and can really make an area cozy! Sorry, go back and see if you can get it!! |

Yeah, for $20 I would have gotten it.... Although you would have paid a few hundred getting it running.
I have my eye on one. DH boss has one that was her grandmothers. No one uses it, Judy or Velma (Judy's Mom) are not into antiques or sewing... it is in great shape. I would get it tuned up and learn how to use it. But I do like the Janome for way to many things. But I would at least use it...

sorry I would have purchased it for the legs they make a great table base for out side in the garden can use a piece of glass or marble or a really large paver brick or old piece of found iron work the round medallion type for a top out side only if rusty if not rusty then inside the with a marble top or wood top. the legs alone can sell for 45.00 I have 4 sets of legs around this house
