With the 2 sewing machines I have had that I use I have always had a hemming foot. I read someplace on the net where a gal had a tutorial on using it. Well I thought I would give it a try... and I have been practicing for the past few days.
I love this. It makes hemming so easy. No pressing and the fold under is so small. I don't know why I haven't just sat down and figured this out sooner. It makes hemming a ruffle easy!
If you haven't tried it or gave it a go at one point but gave up... try it again... and stick with it. It does take a little bit to get the feel of it, but boy it is worth it.

A little hint about attachments: Janome,Kenmore, and Singer all attachments of any of those brands fits all those brands. So now you just have to find cheapest ones. |

I have used that foot a lot. I love it, but I agreethat it is hard to use at the seams.
I love the old machines that have hemming feet in sizes up 3/4 inch. very cool!
For those of you with older Kenmore(and others too, probably) machines, try your local sewing machine shop. They often have old attachments. I had a bunch that went to a machine that couldn't be fixed and I tried to sell them to the sew&vac, but htey said they have tons and they'd take them, but wouldn't buy them...
The ruffler is another great attachment!
I worked at an industrial sewing place and they had a GREAT attachment...it was for binding...and you put the flat piece of bias in the doo-dad and it folded over the edge of the fabric as you sewed it down...I'd LOVE one of those!
Wouldn't that make aprons a breeze?!?

Here the Viking Area is called the stitching post... and they have their own coupons. Usually one for an item and another for classes.

I don't think ya can use a Joann coupon in the Viking area, but I could be wrong.
I will have to look for a foot for my ancient metal machine. I looked up the receipt and it's from 1982. It retailed for $499 at that time. I had no idea pretty much all machines are plastic now, even the expensive ones. So I don't feel so deprived now with a metal machine (made in Japan). :-)

I am going to check my Viking box right now.. I have sewed for 50 years or more and never used a hemmer..Fun to try today....

I know what you mean Sherri about the price of specialty feet. I have a Bernina and the prices of those feet are outrageous. I have a quilting foot I paid $150 for. I was on a "foot" fetish for a while and bought as many specialty feet as I could for my machines. I haven't sewn in a while but I would like to get back to it. Does anyone else have a "foot" fetish like me?

I'm always shocked at the price when I go to purchase a foot or an attachment for my Viking. My little plastic stippling foot was $40 - and all it is is a little piece of plastic on a shank. Doesn't do anything, no bells and whistles- just a little hunk of plastic. |

At least at the Joann's store here, we are not able to use Joann's coupons in the viking section as that is a separate store within the store. The wording on the coupon actually states cannot be used in sewing machine department (or some such thing).

Could you post the link for the tutorial? Try eBay for a getting attachments. I got a walking foot and 1/4 inch foot for my Singer at a great price.

Elizabeth, you inspired me to get out all my stuff for my sewing machine and I found that I don't have a hemmer. Now I'll have to get one! My machine is a Viking and they make a narrow hemmer, but also a half-inch hemmer that I think is really neat! :::Sigh::: Now I have to save up...

I have on for my Husquvarna, but don't use it often. It tends to make the hem too thick at seams, but it would be great for hankies and such.

humm, I will have to try that. Heck , I don't know if my computer machine came with one ; but I am sure it did
I am always use to turning under and just sewing it down
I have to redo all of my pants I buy
I even buy the petite size and still have to cut them off a lot.

Janome calls it a "Hemmer Foot". Since it uses a straight stitch, I am sure you can get one for your kenmore. I think I even have one for Bill's old singer (1920's)..... if not, I am sure you can get an after market one that will fit.
