For those of you asking about sergers under a different thread... I have a few suggestions:
Call the Martha Pullen company and see if there is a serger instructor in your area. I just went to a trunk show, where the instructor showed off the techniques you learn and projects you complete in different classes--they are incredible! And MP classes include a kit with the pattern (for private use) and material.

I will definitely be signing up for some of these classes. Though MP is known for heirloom "fancy" work, a couple of the projects are quite basic.

The other suggestion would be to purchase the dvd and booklet "serge and sew for babies" from nancys notions. Though fast paced, the dvd is invaluable for the tips and the booklet includes a pattern and thoroughly written out directions. The booklet is available separate from the dvd, but together they make a wonderful reference.

1/2 hour to thread?? Sherri, sometime you are in Olympia you will need to drop by with your serger! I can understand 1/2 hour to get the tension correct with a strange combination of fabric and thread (I've been working with minky and pearl crown rayon... grrrr.) But threading should be relatively simple. Maybe if we got together we could figure out some simple solutions for you :) Besides, I'd love to share a cup of tea with you!

You would love a serger Alee once you figure out how to thread it! When I went to buy my new serger (paid a LOT of money for it, for me at least) I told the saleslady all I wanted was for it to be easy to thread. Of course she assured me it was, - it's not. Sometimes if it comes unthreaded it takes 1/2 hour to get it threaded again. But once it is, it's great. |

Sometimes, late at night, when the house is quiet and all the lights are off, you're gonna wake up and find yourself completely covered and pinned to the bed, with serger thread. It's happened to me. |

Kathie...have you not gotten off your xxx and figured out that serger yet!! Come on girl it is not going to kill you!!! For pete's sake, I am posting pictures on this forum!!! You can figure out your serger. Think of all your sweet fun little sewy projects that would be designer...if you would only try to use your serger!! Do I have to come down there and make you do it?!!!! |

If I have an ancient machine that serges, can I do serger stuff? Or is it something different? My machine is an old Kenmore from the early 80's, made of real live metal. ;-)

Ladies, don't be scared of your serger! It can be an incredibly fun machine. Decorative threads open a whole realm of possibilities... I've even learned you can make "lace" using a three thread overlock with wash-away stabilizer and pearl crown rayon. I found a peacock blue green sheer fabric with large dragonflies and I am going to make a fancy half apron that has the serger lace around the edge.
I am not sure how soon I'll be able to get to this, but I'll certainly post a picture when it's ready.
