I've really enjoyed the apron-sew-along thread and thought I'd do the same thing with tea towels since that's my own latest addiction. I'm not sure how long this will last, but I have enough supplies to keep it up for quite a while! How 'bout you all? Anyone else making tea towels?

We had a great time together today. She is the one I took to Florida to pick up my Hoosier in February too. She is a doll. The play was awesome and we went to Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory for dinner where I impressed her with my knowledge of the movie:) She colors my tea towels for me sometimes too.

Shery-lyn Your towels are so cute. What a lucky niece to have you to take her our for a special day. When I was in high school, my aunt who worked for the schools and therefore had summers off, would take me to lunch and a movie every Wednesday. I cherish those memories as does she.

Denise: Yes, these are colored with crayon!! How fun is that? I have a few more that I will post later on this weekend or next week. I am taking my lovely niece to the city today to see "Rent" so will be gone all day. We have to take the train and then we will go out to dinner while we are there. Can't wait!

Here is one of my tea towels. I am taking a little break from the handwork since I am off for the summer and will be sewing my head off for a while!

Kathy I'm with you. We had embroiderd dish towels, guest towels, pillow cases and dresser scarves. I grew up in OH.
I have made some of my own towels out of muslin. But the fabric I like best is the osenburg (sp?) It looks like muslin, but is a little thicker and more texture. Good for dish towels. Grandma used something she called huck cloth, but I can't find it aroung here. You girls who live near Amish areas can probably find it or a soft cotton absorbent cloth just called toweling. It comes on a roll in dishtowel width. All you do is hem both ends. I can't find it in the south. I haven't gotton fancy yet.but when I embroider a tea towel for my teacart I'll probably make it out of linen.
My lastest thing to embroider was the pockets for a new apron I'm making.

TEDDIE

Too blessed to be stressed!

If you want to get a larger amount, you can get 60 flour sacks for $47.40 from this site: https://www.thetoweldepot.com/product.php?productid=18&cat=11&page=1. These are hemmed on all edges, which is nice.

And AHAH!, this is a "tea towel" - http://www.fblinen.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Product/asp/hierarchy/0304/product-id/317729.html.

I got my multi-colored flour sacks in bundles of six on sale at Target for $3.97 a pack, less than $0.70 each! I bought all they had at two stores, 5 packs total, so I'm set. They're thin but they get soft after a washing and I like them. Some people prefer them thicker and I think $2.00 per towel is a fairly normal price for something of good quality. I did a google search for them and found some pretty good deals in bulk amounts. I ended up searching in stores because I didn't want that many and I didn't want plain white. Linen ones, I haven't seen yet, but I think the linen embroidery floss is very pretty.

Dumb Question:

I can not find Tea Towels. The flour sack kind.... My wally's didnt have them, nor Meijers.
What is a good price for these? Is there a place that will sell them in bundles of 50's?
Does anyone have a good source for Irish Linen Tea Towels? I know they will be pricey, but I really like Linen.

My Mom is from Minnesota and all those gals had embroidered dish towels. I remember visiting during the summer and every kitchen I went into had embroidered dish towels hanging on the front of the stove to dry between meals. They all had embroidered pillowcases and dresser scarves as well. I wonder when they found the time to do all that sewing with everything else they had to do.

Oh, glad to know, thanks. So, I'll have pretty dish towels. I'm more of a coffee drinker. :) I just got an idea for one to put under the espresso machine...ziggly lines and swirls. You all inspire me too much..when am I going to get all these fun things done?

We make a difference.
candismom Posted - Jun 12 2007 : 06:52:20 AM

Tea Towels and Dish towels are different. Tea Towels they would stitch and use mostly when having tea. Dish towels were plain towels that were use for the day to day drying of the dishes. Just a little history lesson. :)

I grew up calling them dish towels and still do but doesn't tea towels sound prettier. I order mine from Herrschners, the quality is consistantly good, price reasonable and they have two sizes. I am working on two right now for swaps that I am doing and also a set for my DDIL, really the set will be for my son as he does all and I am not kidding all of the housework and cooking.

Michelle,
Yes, they are the same to most folks. At least what we call tea towels are. I know I grew up hearing them call dish towels and tea towels were something smaller. I understood the tea towels to be used on a tray when serving tea to guests. I am sure that could be wrong though as I am not up on all the etiquette of tea.

I'm so sorry about your loss Sheila. I find myself thinking about certain people or stories when I sew, and it comes back to me when I look at the project, kind of like it was sewn into the piece as I worked it. I hope your sewing makes you feel connected to your grandmother.

I've set aside some tea towels to work, but haven't decided on a pattern yet. I like the garden designs in MaryJane's new sewing book. And wow! Love that redwork stove!

Are tea towels and dish-drying cloths the same thing? I feel so silly asking, but it's safe to ask with you gals. I feel like I should know this, but I don't...

We make a difference.
