Posted - Jun 10 2007 : 11:12:44 PM Lard - yucky!! That recipe seems like it would be pretty harsh. I agree with everyone else. I use olive oil, coconut, palm, and castor oil. Sometimes I'll substitute palm kernel oil for the coconut.

Posted - Jun 10 2007 : 8:34:05 PM Kathy, I agree with the other ladies about your recipe...I'd use more olive oil and less lard - but I'd use the coconut, palm and crisco and olive oil vs. the lard. I'm sure Elizabeth has a fine recipe for you. The other thing is that I generally use 1/2 ounce of fragrance or essential oil per pound of oils I use. So for a seven pound receipe, I would use 3-1/2 ounces of essential oil - I find using less, I hardly can tell the scent of the soap. And in your picture, you show your lye is being poured into the water while it is still on the scale. I would put my water pitcher down into the sink, or into another container in case it breaks, but I would take it off the scale. If you spill lye onto the scale, it can damage it. Other than that, it looks good. Have fun with it! Judy

Posted - Jun 10 2007 : 1:48:32 PM Kathy...I don' like soap made with lard either. Each time I have tried it it turns out a little slimey..ugh. And if you store it for a long period of time it gets an icky smell (like old bacon) so I don't use it. I like to use olive oil, coconut oil and crisco in my soap, and then add small amounts of castor, almond or other oils to superfat it. I agree with E above though..the instructions seem good.

Posted - Jun 10 2007 : 11:13:50 AM The instructions are fine, but I dont like the recipe. There are so many other good recipes.
You can get coconut & Palm (vegtable Ghee) at walmart or a medditerian grocery store. I also would use crisco before I would use lard (best saved for pie crust)..
What oils do you have and I will write you a recipe.
