I saw a great article online in a MAFA (Mid-Atlantic Fiber Association) about how to keep up with your "weaving and textile" activities while travelling. Since I don't weave, but do knit, I was intrigued. The article listed things you could do in the airplane or on the plane, like taking graph paper for design work, downloading podcasts to listen to, finishing work, or even (gasp!) knitting!
So I was thinking that most of those things could be done for us knitting aficianados too.
Does anyone have other ideas on knitting-related things that would be easily done in a plane or while in a hotel or airport?

I was going to say exactly what Kim and Jenny said! This is all right on and what I always do for traveling with knitting. The only time I DID NOT knit on a plane is when I flew from Germany to New Jersey two days after the London subway bombings back in '05. People were still a little freaked out over there. But stateside, it's never been a problem. (I always check the TSA web site first and bring a SASE just in case...) I usually find that small, circular, wooden needles work out best on the plane (like a hat). I also use small camping stuff sacks for each project so I don't have yarn rolling around.

The airlines have posted what they will allow on, including knitting needles, so make sure to check their sites. I took small kid scissors instead of regular ones so I didn't have to turn mine over at the safety checks. I also took my Denise Interchangeables because they are plastic and apparently non-threatening (except to me when I have 800 or 900 stitches on them). The best advice I got was don't take anything to the airport that you aren't willing to part with (since they may take it), or carry a SASE ready to mail it back to your home when they don't allow it.
In the car I keep my knitting things in a ziploc so that I don't chase the yarn around.
Knitting books are nice to peruse while you're traveling, if you have a hankering to knit and can't. Maybe you could pick up some knitting mags as well.

I am not much of a traveler...but I have heard that sometimes you can't get knitting needles on the planes. I have had friends who said they had no problem getting wooden sock needles on though..so that's a thought. I would hate to lose mine at the gate if they decided you couldn't take them on!! Maybe winding those skeins into balls ..not one of my favorite things to do..but it would be a good time for it I guess. I do knit on car trips..but since I get car sick it has to be mindless knitting that I don't have to look at much...like dishcloths or the straight part of socks. I take a small pouch with some small knitting project in my purse everywhere..you never know when you can steal a few minutes for a few stitches, right??
