My Great-Great Aunt Nora was an incredible woman. She lived to be almost 100 years old, was extremely outdoorsy, and made beautiful quilts. Her husband, Ray, was a forest ranger. She often accompanied him on his work and loved to camp. They tried to have children many times but she was unable to carry to term and finally had to stop trying to have children at the risk of her own life.

She was known through out the Saratoga Wyoming area for her amazing quilts. Here is one that is almost 100 years old that she willed to me when she died. She said the red reminded her of me. The red border fabric is the same as on the fabric on the back. It is a flat quit (not batted) and is a modified crazy quilt. My Aunt cut the squares instead of using random shapes but the embroidery is the same as a normal crazy quilt.

According to my mom who used to be a director of a museum- crazy quilts were a way for women "back in the day" to show off their ability with embroidery and display the number of different stitches that they could do.

Please let me know what you think!

Alee

Kate-

No she didn't sign it- Not that I have found yet.

I keep it displayed in my hallway where it won't get any direct sunlight. So hard to balance preserving it verses not appreciating it.

Alee,

Hi Ladies-

Yes, the quilt is very dear to me. I love it and for years I kept it carefully folded and preserved in my great-great aunt's cedar chest which was also willed to me. You see, my mom really loved her Great Aunt Nora and named me after her (Alyssa Nora). I loved my great great and I love how strong of a woman she was. I decided when I was pregnant that I really wanted to honor her again so hence Nora became the third to carry the name in living memory in our family. Someday when she is older and can appreciate how valuable and delicate the quilt is, she will inherit it and possibly the cedar chest as well. Maybe as graduation or wedding presents :)

I really love it Alee!!
Quilts say so much about who we are..
Just thinking about our Pioneer women.. Trying to keep their families warm.... & every stitch they made meant something to them..
i just love quilts!
& yours really shows so many things! look at all the details in her stitching.. So much thought went into what she did.. Each Square.. each triangle.. she made sure she kept a solid & a pattern..
Don't you just love imagining where all that fabric came from.. What it was before it was your quilt?
Who's shirt it was.. Or who's dress it was?
Your snuggling up with a little bit of everyone she cared about..

Alee, Thank You so much for sharing your "Crazy Quilt"! It sure brings back memoreis of the one that my Great Grandmother had. My parents have it in their guest room! My Mother has it on a desk, under glass with a darling jar of vintage buttons! Hope to someday make a little "Crazy Quilt"! Lucky You!

Oh, Alee! That is just amazing - and I especially like the detail of the embroidery stitches. Isn't it just incredible the amount of work (and LOVE) that went, and still goes, into quilts? I really believe that when you wrap yourself in a handmade quilt, you can almost "feel" the arms that made it wrapping around you...

XOXO, Libbie

Very nice and a very special keepsake. Enjoy, this is the first type of quilts I learned to make I like them they are a lot of work but nowadays the embroider machine saves a lot of time.yet they are still time consuming. But its a take anywhere kind of thing. You are lucky to have such a nice treasure however.
