Posted - Apr 12 2014 : 12:48:44 PM hi everyone,
my newest project is a solar oven. i have banana bread in it right now thats almost done. i took a 20" box, cut down from the back to front on an angle (to catch the sun), took the part I cut off and made reflectors that will sit back inside the box. I then added a smaller box inside with which i painted black. I added packing peanuts and packing paper between the 2 boxes to insulate. Then I add the pot of food early in the morning. I bought a piece of plexi glass to cover it. The inside can get to 300 degrees at least for cooking. It will take longer than a traditional oven but it will still cook.

Posted - Apr 22 2014 : 6:54:58 PM Nicely done Connie! I want to try and make one myself too, and see what I can cook in it. It's amazing what you can do to be self sufficient isn't it? Hugs,

Posted - Apr 22 2014 : 12:52:22 PM Connie I think your oven is the bomb! That is so cool that you made that and it works so well. I bought one last year and now I wish I would have had the confidence to attempt to make one like you did. You are truly an inspiration to us all. Congrats!!!

Posted - Apr 13 2014 : 09:42:52 AM Wow how inspiring, and your baked goods look so yummy! My rotary club donates money every year to a project that provides solar ovens to villagers in third world countries to help them start microcredit businesses in their communities. But these ovens are huge... probably 6-8 feet square. So it never occurred tot me that one might be able to use solar energy to cook on a smaller scale. I am intrigued!
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Posted - Apr 13 2014 : 08:40:10 AM We are planning on making one out of wood. I think I will angle it more next time. overall considering we had a partly cloudy day yesterday, it got up to 200 degrees. outside temp it was in the 50's. Had it been warmer out and not cloudy i think it easily would have gotten to 300 no problem. the key thing is too that you have to make sure you 'follow the sun' all day. you have to keep turning it slightly throughout the day. i also noticed we had to fuss with the reflectors just a little, to make sure that one was aiming towards the other to catch max sun exposure. that was no big deal.

Posted - Apr 13 2014 : 06:28:21 AM Connie, great job. I tried to build one and failed.....so I bought one. I am going to show this to my dad and see if he is interested in looking at your design and building one. My commercial one rarely gets over 300 degrees. I am impressed. Please post what you cook. I want to use mine more this summer. Need to perfect angle according to sun and cooking times. I am going to attempt to get our extension agents in our county to research and give a class this summer on this. |
