We are offering at a reasonable rate our handmade house on the Mendocino coast of California as a vacation rental. On Airbnb https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1116650. We are also on the property living in a smaller studio away from the home place. It's off grid, we milled the wood ourselves to build our house, used many recycled materials in it's construction.
We are running a small farm and living as self sufficiently as we can. We barter for many goods.Grow about an acre of veggies and have so far planted 90 fruit trees. This rental will help us to work more at home while we pay off our mortgage.

By the way if any of you farmgirls are passing through, shoot me an email. There's always camping/glamping here as well. We are right off Hwy 1 .

Hi Cathy,
Our temperatures don't get very hot here anytime of the year. Unfortunately it's hard to grow tomatoes, peppers and eggplant here,or sleep outside without getting covered with dew. But it's very comfortable, just don't need AC. So we do have plugs and outlets, but don't need them for heating or cooling. Actually I want to show people that alternative energy is not difficult to Live with. It's quite comfortable, although like your husbands work clothes, takes some thought, ingenuity and maybe sometimes more effort.

Katie, You are living my dream, except I would have to have one electrical outlet in the house for A/C in the summer. We live in southeast Texas and it is extremely hot and humid in the summer. My husband may jump on board one day.
I don't live off grid, but have not had a dryer for almost seven years. I have awakened in the middle of the night before in a panic thinking I had for gotten to hang out my husbands work cloths. No big problem in the winter when the heater is running, but in the summer I guess I would have to iron them dry.
I plan on spending some time on your website, it looks very interesting.
Cathy

To do this we are now living a much down sized life-about 850 sq. ft. now, down from 1480 sq. ft. . We now live with just an outhouse ( do you know how much water a flush toilet takes?), and an outdoor solar shower. We sometimes wish for a two-holer outhouse, but otherwise it's great living so efficiently. The solar shower means we should change our shower times, to different people showering throughout the day, so the sun has time reheat the tank. We haven't quite gotten onto the new schedule yet. So one of us usually has a cold shower at night-or at least just warm. Being on the coast where it can be windy and cold even in the summer makes us want to make another shower, closer to the house using at least a back up propane water heater.
In this new smaller house we have a huge kitchen, a twelve foot table, and the brick oven and it's right next to our huge garden and all the berries and fruit trees. We have very small sleeping areas, and a lot more light.
We are trying to catch up and then we'll start the new shower/ washing machine area.
Do any of you off gridders ever use a dryer ? We bought a propane one and have used it only about two times a year. Even in the winter we just use clothes dryer racks inside.
We are older, I'm 52 my husband 63, we have a 17yr. old and a seven still at home. We really like, well are able to put up with ( I like it ), roughing it to be able to get ahead.
