We finally got one rain barrel installed. I am super excited - 55 gallons to water the garden/flower beds etc. We plan to put in more over the next year or so.

We decided, that instead of leaving them 1/2 full, we are draining them completely today. Then we are turning them upside down to avoid them filling again, and moving them away from the wind (still keeping them outside). I have found that some folks had their barrels freeze at the bottom (even 1/2 full) and ruining their barrels. Just an FYI.

Kristina, in your area, I would recomend a small fish tank pump, and put the hose line in your barrels to keep the water moving, it will help alot with total freeze...

Now, as winter is approaching, does anyone have a Web site for winter rain barrel care? Or can you share what you do, or don't do? I have plastic barrels. Thanks.

I plan on getting some larger hard sided trash cans to use as rainbarrels with the rain gutters.Add spigots so the garden hoses can be attached to water and hopefully I'll be good to go! I didn't know about the goldfish but,love that idea! Thanks! |

Here is that rain barrel I was speaking about. I found this in a 1999 copy of Herb Quarterly. They apparently sell them in England.

I just used our barrel to get vegetables planted in the garden. I love the fact that it also saves us electricity. Here, if we use the hose, it runs the water pump (well water), and now we save on water and electric. We are definitely putting in two more for the flower beds and such.
I just saw a photo of one in a magazine that was pretty neat. I will try to load a photo of it to share.

feeder type goldfish, the kind you buy for feeding bigger fish, 10 medium size here where I live are $2.00, they are very har4dy...

Fish poop is good for the plants too. Think I may get a few for my rain barrel this weekend.

Kristina - funny you should say that... When I was a kid, I remember a metal barrel in the back of the house that my parents caught rainwater with, but I cannot for the life of me remember what they used the water for... I'm going to have to ask! I have used rainwater for my hair, and it does make it so much softer - and fresher-smelling, too! I haven't done that in a long while, but maybe I'll set out a pan next time it storms! Thanks for reminding me!

Nini, my goldfish stay in the barrels all year, if your barrels freeze the top layer in the winter, put a peice of wood floating in there, so they can still get oxygen in the water, or use a small aquarium pump and air line to bubble the water...

I just found out from my mother, that my grandmother used a device to save rain water. They used the water to wash their hair with. She said it made their hair very soft. Just sharing....

We loved our little goldfish in the rain barrel last year, until the neighbor's cat got in the yard, broke through the screen, scooped em out and left their carcasses on the walkway! Eghads!!! We'll have to work on securing it a lot better this year, for sure.
Tina - I can't remember, though - do they live I the barrel all winter?

if you don't use all the water in them quickly, add a couple of goldfish, they will keep the alage under control, and eat any sqeeter larve...

We love our rain barrel. It sure comes in handy on those long weeks/months without rain.

I use a stainless 75 gallon livestock water under my barn roof.
Hubby put a spigot on it that allows for a hose to be attached. This week I have had it in the back of the truck watering in a section of my property that a hose does not reach. I planted white pine trees and they need to be watered in. Works great!
