I was listening to a guy on CNBC (the stock channel in the morning) and he talked about the generator he has. Ran his entire house off of it - within reason. His fridge, coffee maker, some lights, washing machine when needed things like that. He didn't go crazy. He said he never had to fill it with gas. (Another reported asked him it worked out with the gas rationing). Said he only had to add oil once.
What kind of generator could this be? Hubby & I would love something that didn't require a supply of gasoline. Could it be natural gas? Is there a way to hook it up yourself?
Please educate me in the ways of generators. Id love to get one.

We just ordered the solar components from Sunshine Solar (on the internet) for our Simple Pump water pump. They were most helpful. Simple Pump recommends this company.

Talking about solar needs...I am wondering if anyone knows of any company that sells solar water pumps? We have a well and if the electric goes out we dont have any water.

Wow! My first post!
I just bought a farm in florida. It has a large propane generator to use during storm season if I need to. The only thing is.... no one has mentioned how incredibly LOUD THESE THINGS ARE! I would not be able to use it to get off the grid because of that. Maybe it's just our generator |

Propane generators are the best, its much cheaper to run, gas does not go bad like gasoline, much safer, and depending on wattage, yes they can run most of the average house...

Yup, it's quite likely it was natural gas or even propane (seen those giant tanks for sale at Costco?). We've been discussing getting one, and my hubby's work is *in* biomass and fuel. :) If I remember right, we'd get one through his work (company discount!) that can run both natural gas (underground lines can stay intact with some disasters) and gasoline, or something like that. I'm a total fan of duality so we're not locked into just one single thing. Plus if you turn on the generator for a few hours just to keep the fridges/freezers going and then turn it back off for a few hours (is the term cycling? I can't remember), your fuel will last much longer than if you ran it 24 hours a day.
That said, it's hard to use solar panels in my neck of the woods (not enough daylight half of the year), and having a wood stove as backup (well, or for us it's our primary heat source) is a darned good idea. Basically I just want the generator to make sure our critters in the freezer don't melt away. :)

We live off grid with a generator to charge the batteries when the sun is not out...ID LOVE to find out what kind of generator this is....

They have solar generators on the market. That might be what he has. You leave it outside facing south and when you need it, it's ready to go. And it can continually recharge if you have enough sun.
