Today was an eye opener for us. The neighborhood has low water pressure and from the sounds of it, pressure will continue to drop until they can find the leak. I have several jugs of water put aside (only so much room), and just went around filling all the containers I could.
I am so ready for that root cellar, but this was a lesson in what to do in a hurry. At least we did not wake to no water and I had time to fill enough for three days or so.

I buy water every week and have a rotating supply. It's only good for so long and the plastic jugs will not last forever. They will start to leak if they just sit there. I have also located where I can find fresh water from a local spring. We have some water purification tablets stocked as well.

There is only so much room for water, and because of that I have found an interesting solution to being able to fill water for a longer term use by purchasing the AquaPodKit. It is easy to install and provides you safe water in the event of a contaminated public water supply, or problems because of storm surges, water main breaks, etc. It holds up to 65 gallons and fits in your bathtub. When you hear that water may be a problem or you know of an especially dangerous storm etc you can decide whether to fill it or not. go to http://www.aquapodkit.com They also have smaller gallon bags to fill. Warning, previously used can, bottles, plastic jugs that have had milk or fruit juice in them may be contaminated and are not recommended for water storage. Milk protein and fruit sugars cannot be adequately removed from these containers and provide an environment for bacterial growth when water is stored in them. Don't take the risk. Keep your supply in a closed system. This won't help you this time...but you can become prepared. It seems affordable and more convenient than lugging containers from the store. Of course, it is for a stay at home emergency.
