FEED SACKS LIVE ON
YES! We get to do it one more time with big Farmgirl hugs and thank yous to MaryJane and Joan Piercy who have made a supply of feed sacks available to us.
As I researched for our first Feed Sack Project I learned many things about that time in our history such as – the real “hay day” of the printed feed sacks was in the later 30’s and the 40’s during WWII. And as I sit in my cozy, warm house with more than enough to eat, I am reminded that on my very worst day during the pandemic of 2020/2021 I have had it much better than the very best day of many who lived through those incredibly hard times. So Farmgirls, lets participate in the FEED SACKS LIVE ON swap with an attitude of gratitude for our many blessings and to those who persevered during those times to make the world a better place for those of us who followed.
If you have been able to acquire a feed sack to use yourself, that’s wonderful and will allow more Farmgirls to join us. If not, let me know, send me your mailing address (if I don’t have it already from the first swap), and I will send you one -- a random choice. Some pieces are larger than others, so it will be first come, first served until the supply is exhausted. Sign ups until February 28. Partners posted March 1. Oh yes, mailing . . . How about a month to create our wonderful projects? So mail by March 31. APRIL 10.
Not sure what to make? I would encourage you to read (or re-read) all the postings from the FEED SACK PROJECT page to familiarize yourself with the wonderful stories that were posted and the delightful projects that were made. Think aprons, vintage or retro style table adornments, clothes pin bags, broom and flyswatter aprons, pin cushions, book marks, stuffed toys . . . . you get it :-) Hopefully we'll have more wonderful stories this go-around too.
For more inspiration, here are some books to read and links to check out. I would also encourage you to check out Depression Era movies on NetFlix. There are some outstanding documentaries such as "The Dust Bowl" by Ken Burns as well as movies from, or about, the era. Think Shirley Temple, the beloved underdog racehorse Seabiscuit and the delightfully innocent musicals and comedies. Instead of X rated love scenes, happily married Mom and Dad always had twin beds. LOL.

I don't remember grandparents using cast iron but mom and dad did and now I have the few pieces they had. I have also added pieces I have found at thrift stores and yard sales. We have quite a collection now. I use to hang them on pegboard in my pantry in our old house but there wasn't room for that here. We use them very often. I haven't made much use of my Dutch oven lately though.

While I do not have any of the cast iron pots that my Nannie had, my mother gave me hers a few years before she passed. It is a deep cast iron frying pan. She cooked a beef roast in it every Sunday before we went to church. She used it to cook all kinds of things over the years. When I went to live with my mother at age 11, she often cooked donuts for us in that pan. She made a big production out of it to entertain us.

My sentiments too Debbie. I didn't have much involvement with either side of my grandparents nor stories of family events or past events so I cherish what Jean and others share. Its so heartwarming!!

I am sad to say that I do not have any stories as I did not know my Grandparents on either side.
But, I enjoy all of your stories that touch my heart and I can imagine myself in my Grandma’s kitchen baking biscuits in her big cast iron skillet while I look on.
I have cast iron skillets, Dutch oven etc. that I have collected over the years, I love each piece and yes I do use them. I too have MaryJanes Cast Iron cookbook.
I am very much looking forward to this swap as I have a couple of ideas for my feed sack piece.
Thank you so much Jean for hostessing another feed sack swap for us and keeping it alive with all the stories from the past.

I'm so excited Jean, mot only for the feedback swap but because I finally found a cast iron skillet at a thrift store in reached condition but for a great price! I u-tubed how to clean and prep it. Its ready to go and my first order is MaryJanes cast iron book!! I'd love to have a set like you have ( wonderfully displayed)and maybe time will tell. I already know what I want to create! :)

I wanted to get the two Feedsack Swaps from last year up to the front of the list so they would be easy to find for farmgirls who may be considering joining the new swap to come in the next couple of days. I just re-read this entire posting -- all 8 pages. What a delightful read. This one kind of ended up talking about cast iron. I inherited my grandmother's wonderful cast iron skillets and some other items too, and I love them. Yes they're heavy and don't clean as easily as the new fangled pans. But let me tell you, nothing cooks better. After getting MaryJane's Cast Iron book and using her fabulous method to clean and restore them all, my DH found a heavy duty wall-mounted pot rack and set up "Grandmother's Corner" for me.

Thanks Linda. I had thought of that, but my walls are all covered with cabinets, etc. I used to hang them from a heavy pot rack, but it is not fun to bump into a cast iron pot with your head.

You could put hooks on the wall and arrange your cast iron pans. Always at the ready then. I have a friend who did that.

Hi Marilyn,
If the Dutch Oven has a handle you could make a potholder for it also. Make it open-ended and use clear nylon snaps to close it.

You know my husband has one of those Dutch ovens for camp Fire cooking. It has legs and you pile coals on the lid. He also has one of the biggest skillets I have ever seen. I can try to make a handle cover for him to use also.

I have two 10" cast iron skillets. The Lodge is so heavy! I have a slew of smaller ones.i have a bunch! Problem is where to keep them all! I wish I could afford more of the LeCruset line. My son gave me an oval dutch oven for Christmas several years ago. It is Devine. I think, I will go and see what the Home place has...then I can save my $$$. Meanwhile I will see about making some handle covers. Thanks Judith and Linda.

Linda -- no pattern; I just kind of measured the handle of a fry pan and went from there. Layered it like a quilt with double stuffing, finished the ends, folded it around and stitched one end closed.

I have received lovely gifts from Judith, who was my swap-mate from Feed Sacks. She made placemats, potholder and a cast iron pot holder. She did a lovely job and I thought the potholder was a wonderful idea. I am going to make some for Christmas gifts, Thank you so much Judith
