I recently discovered http://www.freecycle.org/ and love it. I got a worm bin and a sewing machine from it. I have also given away a lot of wonderful stuff on Freecycle. How it works... You sign up for a yahoo email group and receive either live emails or a daily digest of emails from people who are giving away stuff or looking for items. It is really a wonderful thing.

Charity? Ours actually kind of encourages giving to charity as well.

I have been a part of our local Freecycle for a few years now also. I haven't received anything , but I have gotten rid of a lot of things. Sometimes I get a little aggrevated with people who ask for charity, but our person who oversees things will usually set them straight. Anyway it feels good to help out others in need.

Well, Jonni if it makes you feel any better, I was part of Freecycle in NYC for YEARS and the desk was the only good thing I got! lol The rest was old mattresses, and such, always "trash" nothing I ever wanted. I think a lot of it had to do with the person running it. She would forget she was running it for months at a time, and she had it set up where she had to approve each email........um sometimes we wouldn't get emails approved through for like 3 months then all the sudden a flood of them when she decided she would go in and approve them! I don't know why she just didn't pick some one else to take over, pick more moderators, or just let people post!

But, really the one where I am now is awesome. The lady I got the seeds from showed me around her house and she got awesome things from freecycle! She even got this outdoors lawn set that would cost thousands of dollars it was one of those round concrete tables with the half circle concrete benches. All really nicely molded with the flowers in them. Beautiful! She said it was a pain to get and very heavy, but it was FREE and will probably last forever! I loved it! Wish I had gotten in on that. lol

I can't believe people are giving away ducks and chickens though. lol haha I guess when I get a pen set up for my birds, I won't have to worry about buying them. lol Even fish are being given away on there. lol haha

Jonni: LOL! Why is right. I am so sorry yours stinks.

Heather: Wow! You have made out. It sounds like you have gotten a lot of great stuff. I really hope the sewing machine is a good one. I just got a sewing machine over the weekend also and it was just what I wanted. Today, I picked up a brand new craft table that folds away. I couldn't believe it when it was offered to me. An angel gave it to me; an older lady who has terminal cancer. I am going to name the table after her, "Linda".

I guess your free cycle is better than ours around, here. It seems like most folks are giving away stuff they are trying to decide whether to throw out in the trash or not. A recent post was for a 1980's broken beta/vhs machine. Why?

I was a part of it when I was in queens! I got a desk ironically that matched my husbands childhood dresser exactly, it must of at one time been sold as a set! But, we still have his dresser so it was so ironic that I was able to get a solid wood desk that matched it exactly!

Then I just joined it here in Kansas a few weeks ago, I don't really have much to get rid of yet cause we got rid of most our stuff when we made the big move half way across country. But, I have been able to get several things lately-

a graduating owl bank-my sister is graduating law school next week and loves owls! lol I got her grad gift for completely free (we are not big spenders, she is used to thrifting and home made gifts, she loved it! lol). She said you know me so well! And was really happy with it. Right now we are in a financial crunch cause my husband just is barely making enough money to cover our living expenses, no "fun" money left over, so it was a blessing to get her "gift" for free!

Seeds, all kinds of local organic seeds! By a brand new company here local. They are all heirloom, and organic.

Electric blanket-brand new! never used! My DD really needed one too but we couldn't afford one! I was going to try to save money to get her one by next year! But, got a FREE one yesterday!

Today we will be picking up two great things a blonde wood dresser, that some one was updating their bedroom furniture and no longer needed but still in great conditions. And all the windows out of some one's home as they are getting all new windows. I will be making cold frames for the garden with these windows!

Friday, I am getting a sewing machine that was some one's mothers, but her mother died and the daughter doesn't sew. So she offered it. I am hoping it's a good one, but the daughter being unfamiliar with such doesn't really know. But, it's FREE!

So far I'm coming up with some great stuff. I've also missed out on some things I wanted-ducks, chickens, dishes, baskets, but that's ok, I am still getting some great things! lol :o)

I just gave away a trundle bed to a single mom. Her daughter needed a new bed. It made me feel good to be able to give it to someone who I know really needed it. I love freecycle!

I have used it for a lot of years. There are several in our area. I have given away all kinds of things, met some fellow gardners, and gotten a few bargains as well!
