Hi everyone!
Was just wondering how many of you out there are using the old Singer sewing machines or any other old machines for that matter and how you like using them. I found 2 in the back of an antique shop and picked them up for $5 each. After contacting someone in my area about getting them in working order and or if it was worth it, I discovered the better of the 2 was produced between 1935-38 and is in really excellent condition! He's just going to update the wiring and do a cleaning, so when all is said and done it will have only cost me about $75 to restore a perfectly good machine. SO EXCITED!! Should have it by next Thursday and can't wait to get back into sewing again. The other one I'm going to wait a bit to fix it up, but we will be restoring it to it's original treadle operating system. He & I are going to be looking for a treadle base that will fit the machine. This one was produced between 1913-15 and has beautiful hand painted designs on it. I just love these old machines and consider them works of art

The article about the guy turning sewing machines into tractors was interesting, but I have to admit it made me sad that he was taking these lovely machines and turning them into tractors:( The problem with that is that then there are fewer and fewer of them out there to be restored or used for parts with other machines. The guy who is doing my repairs says it's getting harder and harder to find machines that can be restored and or for parts to fix others because of course these parts are not being manufactured anymore, yet people with 70 year old machines want them to be fixed so they can continue using them. A lot of them have been passed down as family heirlooms and then there are people like me who are wanting to restore and use these old machines again.
I should be getting my machine tomorrow and can't wait to get sewing on it. I'm thinking of making a baby doll for my little granddaughter who will turn 2 in May. She's all girl and love her babies:) Anyone know where I can find any free patterns for dolls?? I'll post pics of my machines as soon as I figure out how to do this on this site.

I have 2 singer Featherweights and 1 Singer 301. I have never used the 301, but I use the Featherweights all the time. I love them. I learned to sew on a Featherweight when I was i Jr. High school.

I love my Singer featherweight. I learned to sew on one 40 years ago. I've used newer more expensive machines for fancy work but nothing replaces my feather weight.

I love those old machines. I do lots of sewing on a 1940'singer featherweight . My daughter made her first quilt on a early white rotary treadle that had been converted to electric. The old machines don't do anything fancy but last forever and make perfect stitches

Hi Karen, I'll post some pics when I get it back. I will be keeping an eye out for a cabinet at garage sales and possibly estate auctions, but Craigslist is a good idea as well. I think the shipping involved with ebay would be cost prohibitive:/ Yes, the guy who's working on mine told me the old ones are great because they can be fixed. The problem with the newer electronic digital ones is that they are not easily fixed and then even that can cost quite a bit. Sounds like you got quite a deal for yourself as well with your machine:)

I'm so excited for you! We'd love to see some pics of your beauties, too. An old sewing machine, in my opinion, is better than most new machines these days. They're MUCH heavier and built to last. Below is a pic of my old Kenmore that is circa early 1960's. It runs unbelievably smooth and can sew through denim like butter.... I bought it from a woman for only $10.
Look on Ebay or Craigslist for a cabinet. Good luck!

That is so cool. I am so excited for you. I love stuff like that. I have a very old singer that a neighbor gave me. It works but I use it for a decoration. It makes me smile whenever I look at it. Just imagine the things that were created on those machines and the creatives hands that uses them.
