I have what I'd call summer scarves that consist of delicately dyed (ever-so-slightly an array of pastel colors) doilies that are then sewn together. Thanks to our adorable Katmom, I now have a way to wear them in the winter by combining them with the oh-so-clever re-purposed cashmere sweater scarf she sent me recently. Thank you Grace!!!!

It looks like she cut squares from cashmere sweaters and then overlapped and stitched them together.

When wrapped around my neck, I feel warm and snuggly (and loved by grace).

All the CT Simpler Life Sisters are getting excited for our next project! Thank you for the inspiration! Everyone has their sweaters ready! I love vintage pins, and think a sweater scarf will be a great way to show one off, too.

MaryJane, do you have a pattern you recommend for the crochet scarf you put with the sweater scarf?

Farmgirl Hugs,
Nicole

I wore my scarf (blue/lilac one) on my recent trip back to Washington, It was so cozy to wear on the plane and while I was Junktiquing in Spokane, WA.

Grace, Oh thank you for posting that! I've already told all the girls to start looking around in their closets/thrift stores for sweaters so we can do this for our February meet up. Wish you lived here on the East Coast, too! You could lead us in this project! It's always so much fun meeting other farmsisters! :)

Farmgirl Hugs,
Nicole

here is what it will look like when you lay it out and stitch it... I stitched this up real quick from some leftover squares..
hope this helps you with the visual.

Nicole,,, what a great idea, for a farm~girl get -together...

All you need is a long table (dinner table)
A roll of masking tape ( I like the cheap Dollar store ones cuz they are not uber sticky and they tear easier)
Scissors,
Pre-washed & machine dried cashmere sweater (1 per scarf), (I machine wash & dry the sweater to get it a bit fluffier)
Matching thread & bobbin thread,
And... a bottle of wine to celebrate the completion of the scarves! lol!

You can make a cardboard template for the squares 3x3 or 4x4 which ever you prefer) to cut each square,,,
or
like I do, lay the sweater flat, use a ruler, straight pins to mark the cutting lines across and then cut down (left to right and then top to bottom)

A short sleeve sweater equals 1 scarf,,, if you have long sleeves you can make your scarf extra long or save the extra fabric/squares for another sweater.

Then lay your pre-cut squares any way you wish on the tape and then stitch away. After you remove the tape from the scarf, I do another run of stitching over the squares for strength.

On some of the scarves, I stitched a few little seed beads on to look like a Daisy near the end of the scarf,,, or you can embellish it with ribbons, lace, what ever..

Nicole, if I lived on the East Coast, i'd be over for that hen party & craft fest...oh and the Wine too! snork, giggle!

(p.s., I do not sew or serger the raw edges on the squares.)

Beautiful and over-the-top creative !!! Do you have to serge the edges of the cashmere? Love it.....only thing....Mz Maryjane, you should have modeled it....but I like your display also. I am working on an area to make ready the next days outfit and this would be cute in that area for pins, scarves and etc.

Love them! Yes, together it does look simply amazing, though I bet both would be equally beautiful on their own. Clever!

I have a drawer full of cashmere sweaters that no longer fit well. Even though they are older, and I did wear them a lot, I haven't been able to let them go...now I know what I will do with them!

Another brilliant farmgirl idea!

Nicole

I like each of the scarves separately, but when MaryJane put hers & Grace's together it was instant FarmGirl Chic.

Love reading about everyone's great ideas. Grace, this is one I will try. Never thought to tape my fabric pieces together but what a fabulous idea. Thanks and the scarf is beautiful!

p.s., here is a tip for eswing these scarves... go figure after having stitched up several scarves I thought there has to be an easier way... & there is!
I always keep a cheapo roll of masking tape by my sewing table, to p/u needles and loose threads that have fallen to the carpet...
Tada! light bulb went on, why not use the masking tape to hold the squares in place...

So on my sewing/craft table I stick 1 end of the tape onto the table, making sure that the Sticky Side is facing up at me,,, then I secure the other end of the tape to the table... lay the squares down onto the sticky masking tape, press to adhere, remove the whole thing from the table and then start stitching.
Once complete, remove the 'stitched squares/tape from the tape by gently split/tearing the tape away... so much easier... Just wish I had thought of it sooner! lol!

oh my dear Maryjane,, you are so very welcome and so very loved...
I just adore Cashmere anything...
So when ever I see a forlorn cashmere sweater in a Thrift,,, I just have to rescue it...
I think people are quick to dismiss old wool/cashmere sweaters forgetting that those old sweaters can be repurposed into scarves, mittens even soft booties for a wee one or stitch up a sweet soft pillow filled w/buck or flax seed & lavender of course! to be a sweet dream pillow.
You can never go wrong with cashmere.... fyi, there is even a small town in Washington, called 'Cashmere'...

Maryjane, enjoy , stay snuggly warm and Hugz -n-squiches from me to you.
>^..^<

Maryjane, I luv how you combined the scarf with your summer scarves... uber sweet and feminine.

My go-to scarf is a brite lime green one... it just brings a smile to my face and warmth around my neck.

'sew' easy to make too!
