Yes, I'm a vain farmgirl. I wear make-up daily - even when I'm not at my job. Why? Who knows. I do let my face breathe from time to time and try to take care of it as best I know how. I can say I've never been seen in public without make-up. Perhaps that's just a Southern thing (although I don't speak for everyone) or maybe it's just the way I was raised. Anyway, here's the deal.

I'm getting to the age (nearly 39) where I need to take a little better care of my skin. My family ages very well, but we don't have great skin. I began using Bare Minerals make-up years ago. I'm down to just the foundation, as I am allergic to anything with color - lip, eye, cheek color. The foundation doesn't bother me. I've changed to Clinique as it's supposed to be hypo-allergenic. The colors are great and so far, no problem with the foundation.

However, the cleansers I purchased (with the help of an associate) gave me a wild allergic reaction - red, rashy, itchy, peely. It's like a chapped, sunburned face...in January. I've done this before and it'll take about 3 weeks for my skin to recover and my whole face will peel first. Sorry, if that's too much information, but it is what it is.

I've been using Dove sensitive skin bar cleanser, but even it leaves my face feeling tight - which is not a good thing. I have very dry skin - and obviously very sensitive. Anything that will add enough moisture also causes break-outs, with which I have a problem too.

So, if there are any other farmgirls out there with "face issues" please tell me what you use. I have a fortune in Clinique products to return and would like to add a facial routine to my life that will benefit me in the long run.

I have very sensitive skin and I have found that Burts Bees face washes work great and I don't have any reactions to it.

YAY Holly! I am so glad that you have finally found some relief with the goat milk soap. And I think a trip to the doctor is really a good idea. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of it. It must be nice to use a product and not have a reaction. So glad to hear it!!!

Thanks for all of the great information. I went to my local (60+ miles away) health-food store this morning and was in HEAVEN! I couldn't believe all they had. I'm going to have to grab my MJF magazines and start a list. Some of the stuff I only read about!! They did have several lines of soaps and even cosmetics. I settled on an inexpensive bar of goat's milk soap - the brand is Canus - I got the unscented for sensitive skin. I washed my face as soon as I got home. Talk about squeaky clean! For the first time in months (ever?) my skin didn't feel tight and it removed my make-up beautifully. They also carry a line of mineral make-up called Larenim (the "e" has an accent mark over it.) I purchased a foundation and an eye color, since that's what I have so much trouble with. Their stock wasn't very full, but I'll give it a try. I've been talking with HollyMaker about a line of organic products I want to try, including a new make-up line available March 1. Right now, I'm just relived to have found some relief! Although, considering how my allergies seem to be compounding, I think I'm due a trip to my doctor to see about a dermatologist and even allergy testing. Thanks for the good advice and keep the ideas coming. I'm researching each and every one. Who knows which one may be right for me.!

My vote is Lush cosmetics. www.lush.com Fresh Pharmacy might do you good...I need exfoliation, so I use their Ocean Salt cleanser, Tea Tree toner, and Vanishing cream facial lotion. My mom is a Philosophy girl and swears by that, so yeah! If you have a Lush store near you, or in a Macy's near you, be sure to get some samples and have them try stuff out on you.

I was looking through some beauty recipes earlier and came across one that would likely calm your irritated skin (if you aren't allergic to the ingredients). It's called the: Get-the-Red-Out Facial Mask
1/4 cup plain whole yogurt or sour cream
2 tablespoons honey
Stir the yogurt and honey together until smooth.
To use, after cleansing, spread the entire mixture on your face and neck, avoiding the delicate areas around your eyes and mouth. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse well with warm water and pat your skin dry.

You could also try soaking irritated skin in plain milk.

A few years ago, I had super sensitive skin as well and went to the dermatologist finally because nothing helped. He recommended the Cetaphil face wash and a super light non scented lotion that I can't remember the name of. I had to ask the pharmacist for it but both really helped my skin at the time. After a while I was able to quit using them and now I use an organic facial regimen (that I sell) and it works just great. I highly recommend organic skin care products.

Our skin is the largest organ on our bodies and a very absorbant one. My philosophy is, if there is a doubt, go without! If I can't read the ingredients on the back of a bottle and don't know what they are, I steer clear. There are so many harmful chemicals in commercial products now days that really have no business being in there but they are cheap to make and cheap to buy. You will save yourself time, money and your skin buy going natural as possible. Even then, I would highly recommend doing a spot test of any new product in the 'crook' of your elbow or somewhere else discreet to test for a reaction. I have a list of chemicals to avoid in personal care products that I could share if you would like more info.

I have huge skin issues and I have to use fragrance-free products now. I use Physician's Formula for a powder and blush and Almay intense i-color with no problems as they are fragrance free also. Vanicream has bar soap that is heavenly and you can get it at Walgreens. They have moisturizers too.

I hope your skin feels better soon...

Cetaphil products are good for sensitive skin. I am getting ready to try Rosemary Gladstar's homemade facial scrub and moisturizer found in her herbal book. We will see how it goes.

Rosemary! Thanks! My name is somewhat unique. I am finally coming into it. I have been called Tammy most of my life just because most people mispronounce my name.

Darlene, I have had much trouble with anything that is anti aging, anti wrinkle, firming or the like. Usually they have retinA in them. Practically burns my skin! I also agree with vitamin E oil. Tea tree oil is good to. But, sort of pricey. I have been told that it has natural antibacterial properties. Plus, it smells nice.

Count me in also. I had a reaction to Anew from Avon that sent me to the ER with swollen face , lips and eyes. The MD said there is a certain ingredient in makeup that causes this reaction with sesitive people...Lucky Me! I have had good results with Ponds sensitve skin . Try putting vitamin E oil or the Olive oil on to calm your skin down.

Be Blessed,

My skin is sensitive too. I use mix up a cup of yogurt with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Scoop up a handful and massage over your face for a minute, then rinse with warm water. It leaves my skin feeling soft and silky, not dry.

Good luck finding what is right for you. By the way, I was taught to always wear make up from the time I get up until I go to bed. It's just habit for me now.

Holly, I'm a southern gal too, though not nearly as young as you are. You're not vain at all to be concerned with your looks, and to want to be your prettiest when you go out! I totally "get" that.

You might want to consult with a good dermatologist to get some pointers for this stage in your maturing process. It would be great to find one like the one I go to that has an associated spa for fabulous facials, skin care products and cosmetics sold only through doctors' offices. It may be that you have rosacea or some other "itis" that makes you especially sensitive to certain products; treatments for such things are easy and inexpensive. Your dermatologist and/or spa therapist can help you figure out what to steer clear of and what will really help you.

I would advise you not to use any cleanser that has perfume or mineral oil in it. Dove is very harsh, I think. Instead, try Cetaphil's liquid cleanser, the super-mild one. You can get it in drug stores. My dermatologist recommends it without hesitation, even though his practice sells other products that I'm sure he would love to sell me. (I'm waving at Tamaya up there for recommending the same thing! Welcome, Tamaya -- LOVE your name!)

Big thing here: do not use fabric softener on towels you use to dry your face after washing! It took me years and years to figure out that was the source of a lot of skin irritation. When I quit using fabric softener, my skin improved dramatically. Of course, make sure your face towels are immaculately clean. Use the purest laundry soap you can get or make: no perfume, no bleach. Like a lot of farmgirls, I use white vinegar instead of store-bought fabric softener. That's perfectly okay for face towels.

Don't forget: nothing you put on your face will ever make you look more beautiful than a smile :-)

I am in agreement with CasieD. I am 42 and have always had troubled/ sensitive skin. I also have allergies to a lot of scents. I used to think more is more. I have found great results with Oil of Olay Sensitive Skin face cloths but hate the idea of the disposable cloth. So, now I use Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, Lubriderm Daily Moisture and Witch Hazel. I would like to find a substitute for the Lubriderm that is light.

My first post!!! I need a catchy Farmgirl username.

I am feeling for you. My skin is super sensitive and every little thing gives me a "wind burned" feel. I use olive oil and then wash my face. It helps so much to ease the burn. I know you can use oatmeal I haven't a clue how.Another great and wonderful thing is pure lanolin. It goes on amazingly thick and you wear it to bed. When you wake up wash it off and amazing things! It is in the baby section where you find the nursing items. It is perfectly safe and natural as it is able to be ingested by new born babies to help in nursing.
Hope you find something that works for you!

I used to use makeup daily, but have now stopped wearing on most days. When I am sweating up a storm in the summer garden, I don't. When I know I'm not going anywhere or to the gym, I don't etc. I just can't afford the lotions, and used to be the "Queen of Creams" so to speak. I am now trying a natural scrub that was suggested on here, for age spots (brown sugar/lemon). I also use witch hazel ($.99/bottle) for my toner.

I'm also 39, have sensitive skin and have been using mineral makeup for 6 years now. There are two gentle cleansers that I like, Olay foaming facewash Sensitive skin and Cetaphil Daily Facial cleanser. I use Aveeno Positively Radiant daily moisturizer with SPF 30 every morning before applying my mineral foundation as well. I add a little mineral blush and finishing powder then eye and brow pencil. To finish it off I made my own spray from a recipe posted here. Fill a fine mist sprayer with half water and half witch hazel. I added one drop of tea tree oil too. A quick spritz over everything and I'm set!

Holly, another thought is to try the oil cleansing method. You can find info on it by googling. I have done it in the past and it really helped my skin a few winters ago when it was both dry and breaking out. Most of the time I'm too lazy and I don't normally have sensitive skin, so I don't bother. I also use mineral foundation but not Bare Minerals. I used to purchase from Aromaleigh, but since it closed, I have heard Meow Cosmetics is good also, although I have not had need to buy anything yet since I stocked up when Aromaleigh went out of business. From Meow's website "No preservatives * No silica * No parabens * No bismuth in any of our mineral foundations. Meow Cosmetics does not used nano particles or micronized minerals." Hope you find something that makes your skin feel wonderful.

Hi Holly, I have wacky skin too. Just may be your hormones. I started having trouble around 40, so I started working from the inside out. I use L-Lysine, taken orally. It can be found at any drugstore, in the vitamin section, I wash with Kirk's Original Castile soap & use Bio-Oil. I have been lucky never to have had any skin problems like pimples or acne & not many wisdom lines :)except from smiling. I wear mineral foundation. But like Emily stated a Dermatologist may be needed in your case.

I use Arbonne, which is Swiss formulated, but made here in the States. It is much more natural than most. I don't promote it, but I do sell it if someone needs some. I have very sensitive skin myself and have found that most products have some sort of fragrance or something that does NO good thing for my skin. If you want more information, post me a note with some sort of way to contact you. Good luck.

Today is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.

Holly I would say to return the Clinique and then go to a dermatologist. Estee Lauder is not very good for sensitive faces and I remember proactive did the exact same thing to my face several years ago.

Good Luck
