i dont remember the brand of henna i used, nini. i bought it at the health food store in a little jar. it was intended especially for hair.

Great hair stories! It's nice to end the day with a smile after "listening" to like-minded" ladies like you! Now..time for bed..stockings are stuffed..Christmas day tomorrow.

One time when I was in HS I colored my hair blonde, however it turned out neon orange!!! I wish I could remember the name of the brand. It was obviously hideous! But this is by far the worse thing that EVER happened. I went to get my hair frosted. After my hair was pulled through the cap and the lightener was applied, I was put under the dryer to hasten the process. While under the dryer I got a phone call and got out to answer it. While on the phone I said to the stylist,"My head is burning." She flew over and started yelling,"Oh my God get under the water." My head was smoking! When she pulled the cap off chunks of hair came with it. I walked in with below the shoulder curly hair and left with 1" short spikey hair! OMG!!! Since then I have had spikey hair and I finaally threw the dye away. Everyone says they love my hair and ask me if I know who I look like. They all say "You look just like Paula Deen! LOL! One of these days I'm going to say,"I'm her sister!" Merry Christmas Sisters!

I have finally found a color that I love. It is Garnier and called Chocolate/Caramel. It turns out a reddish brown, but really natural looking and just enough red to look like my natural auburn color. I don't like the gray either. My DD used to do my hair, but now that she is in SC, I have to color it myself. I was just down there and she gave me the cutest cut. I am growing out my short layers and started looking like I had a mullet! She says I can grow it out and still have a style. Let's just see if I can get past the part where I always end up cutting it because I can't do anything with it phase.

I have done this (all of the above) ROFL! Everytime I colour my hair it comes out as a surprise! I learned to look forward to it

Kids today should not be shocked by haircolor. I work at a middle school and hair styles are pretty interesting sometimes. I guess they just don't think their mothers or grandmothers should do it. I colored my gray Friday because I don't have the pretty stuff yet. I got it a little darker than normal. One little spot didn't get colored as well but my daughter says it just looks lie a highlight. I used a light brown henna once. I guess it was okay.

I am laughing hard after reading your perm adventure. My hair has thinned over the years and I keep thinking about getting a perm now, but I'm afraid I will have the "Bozo" look afterwards. I used to get them years ago when my hair was long and thick. The weight of my hair kept the perm under control. Maybe I'll go ahead for the "shock effect" after the first of the year. That way I will have a few months of winter hat wearing to calm it down!!!!

i have used a henna product, it was actually a tint instead of a dye. It was perfect and I did not have all the drying out that i normally did with the colors at the salon...plus it didnt take 3 hours to do!!

I used to have pretty red hair when I was young, but in my 40's it got darker and more silver showed up...so the first time I tried to dye it red, it came out nearly purple! You could see me from space! Kids would whisper to moms in grocery store "Mommy, that lady has purple hair!" I was somewhere between mortified and defiant! HA! I have since learned to time carefully my colour augmentations...I actually wish my silver hair would come in faster. I find it more attractive these days =)

Nini, I would've loved to have seen your red hair..I probably would have been in awe, and thought you meant it to be that way! And, I've thought of henna before, ladies..but thought it had more of a red cast. I guess I just want a plain old brown with a little shine. Too young for grey..it's not a pretty grey like some.

Thanks for the grapeseed oil tip, Nini. I just happen to have some and will use it. My hair turned out way too dark, of course..can't be natural for a 62 yr. old lady. darn. Oh well, could have been worse. Speaking of funny hair stories.. I found my birth family when I was about 30. I had long straight hair about half way down my back. We were so excited to be together again. I went to visit one of the sisters and we got snowed in. She worked as receptionist at a salon in a mall. The 2 of us went to the shop to meet her co-workers. No customers due to snow. The girls decided to give me one of those beautiful rippelly, wavey, stacked perms. Needless to say, it came out fuzz, clump to just below my chin. What a hoot! I didn't have the heart to be upset..I was in shock. I ended up going back to my job with that perm. Tried to tame it with barettes. Every once in awhile one would let loose and ping across the office. Luckily, never hurt anyone. I wouldn't cut it for 2 months, because it was a gift from my sister. So, I guess a little dark color "ain't nuttin' baby".

i use to darken my hair with henna about once a month when it was long. i loved it. it gave my hair some weight so that it fly all over the place.

Oh my gosh, you poor thing! I've done that before! How did your hair come out, Judith!? One time it was so bad, I called the company for an emergency fix... they're helpful, but they may tell you to wait a few days before doing anything. Hair usually lightens a bit with a few washings, so don't panic!!!
If your hair dries out too, too much, use some grapeseed oil on your hair before washing it the next few times. Follow through with your regular shampoo and make sure to use your regular conditioner (it seems to really interact with the grapeseed oil remaining in your hair after shampooing - it's wonderful!). This really helped me more than once. I highly recommend it as a regular conditioning treatment, too!
You're absolutely right, though - it's a good thing to have a sense of adventure. This last time, I went a little darker and a little too red. My hair glowed under the grocery store lights. You should've seen the expressions on people's faces as they walked by! I mean, a girl likes to turn heads once in a while - but not like that! I could've cried, but I decided to laugh instead. What's life without a little excitement and dazzle-pizzazz, right? It's been a couple of weeks now, and the color is much more "normal," and no more horrified gawks at the grocery story! LOL!
I would love to try henna, but I've not known anyone to successfully use it. There just has to be a better way to color our hair! I'd go au naturel, but I'm just too young inside to let my gray shine yet!!!
