I am making my first white eyelet top, for myself. I guess you could call it eyelet- it's really just like eyelet, but the embroidery does not have any holes associated with it. It's a solid eyelet- if that makes sense! It is still rather sheer. It was 1/2 off, so it got marked to $3 a yard and my top needs less than that. I'm not breaking the bank sewing it by any means, but I think I'm going to have to figure out what to wear under it!
Two questions:
I wondered if anyone knows a source of 100% cotton eyelet that is not so sheer.
What would I wear under a somewhat sheer white eyelet top with shoulder straps and lace? A strapless bra? A close fitting tank / camisole?
I really just want to check the pattern fit for making a few of them- but you know I'll want to wear the top later, too!
I can get away without a lot of bust support- it's the see through ness that counts. I could wear it over a swim suit instead- but your under garment ideas are welcome. I'm laughing because my son just turned 18, and I realized it's been a long time since I wore much white. I vowed I'm never be able to wear it again " back in the day" and perhaps I should not have jinxed myself, lol! I no longer know how to wear white!

Rose you are such a sweet heart-
I was just watching Tuck Everlasting on Netflix yesterday and I found myself envying Mom Tuck's apron- and then she had a different type on in the evening that was basically just a swath of fabric tied around her waist- It looked great on her but I would have to lose about 40 pounds for it to work on me! LOL

make an old fashioned corset cover it would have lace at the top and solid fabric over the important parts and would add a nice lacy layered detail

It's so fun to read all the responses about white eyelet! I dug around in my top dresser drawer, and noted that I have about 3 different white cami type tops to wear under things that might be sheer or low cut. I guess I got the idea to try wearing them under certain styles a few years ago, and then never made the move to sew any new styles, lol! Well, except for the lovely Prairie Girl dress from Favorite Things, that is!
The white eylet top is sitting there, waiting for me to pick out a marginally sewn seam. And oh yes, I need to throw the whole project in the washer as the cats climbed up on the ironing board and made it their bed for the day. Onward and upward!

I always wear a close fitting (but not squish the life out of you) tank top underneath. As close to 100% stretch cotton as I can get. IF I have to, and that's usually a big if, I have bought those clear straps that you can attach to a strapless bra. It helps with the support, but still makes me feel like i'm not advertising my bra.
Church is usually the only place I get to wear white anymore. Sticky toddler fingers coming at me is a scary scary thing..lol
I have an all white sundress that I bought for this summer, but its hanging in there hoping in 10 years I will still be able to get into it. lol

Alee, I will try to scan the picture in and email it to you. It really would be a simple dress to make. I would need your measurements of course. We can discuss this one on one. I am getting ready to redesign my sewing room this week so I can, finally, go into production. I also have a woman who wants me to copy her favorite FLAX dress and is willing to pay very well to get me to copy the pattern. My true love in life, as far as "work" goes would be to design for real women, with real lives, children and chickens. We all deserve to feel good about ourselves. You are on my list..and thanks for being you. MaryJane couldn't find a better representative for "Farmgirls" than you. You encompass all the best qualitys of a farmgirl.
Hugs to you and that "little" girl of yours who has got to be growing like a weed.

Rose- that dress sounds beautiful and something I would love to have but I could never afford something that expensive! Let me know if you ever are able to re-create the design! I would love to see a picture!

This is so interesting as my neighbor called me today and asked if I would make her a white eyelet blouse. I have been picking up eyelet bedspreads, dust ruffles even some valances so I could repurpose them. The reason I started looking for eyelet was a dress that was for sale in the Sundance catalog (Robert Redfords company which I love their stuff just can't afford it but it is full of great ideas for jewelry and clothing) this eyelet dress was very simple, short sleeved, scoop neck, hemline below the knee and was, are you ready for this?, $550!!! It was so simple. I took a design class recently and am getting ready to tackle making my own designs. I love the prarie girl look, I love dresses and skirts and I love comfort. I also love being a part of MaryJanes farmgirls!
Remember, some people look for happiness, others create it!

In my experience, matching the lining to your skin color looks the best. A skin-colored bra or undershirt will not show as much either.
What a great fabric find! Have you been scouting the fabric aisles a lot this summer?

You can buy white lining material that should work. Or maybe a light weight white cotton that might be a nicer feel in the summer months. Alee's directions sound right to me. You want the lining's seams to be next to the shirt's seams -- that is wrong sides together when you put the lining in the shirt. Suzanne |

I would cut out a duplicate of the top pattern and just sew them together to line it. Right sides together so you then reverse it. Then any darts are part of the lining as well?

You could always wear a tube top. I love eyelet fabric. I wear it with white tank top even if the straps show. you could always wear a strapless bra or those convertible bra. |

Thanks, ladies! I think I'm stuck 20 yrs ago, where you were never supposed to show any straps, like under a tank top, etc!
Alee, the top has darts and a drawstring waist. Any tips for making a non- lined pattern turn out lined? This buttons in the back. I could probably sew the lining into the band that goes around the chest, like a little curtain that would hand down underneath everything, if that makes sense! I know how to line things so they are reversiable- not sure about the darts, though.

I usually wear a white tank under them. I have a couple of boys undershirts that are tanks & I have worn those before with it!

I don't where white very often either because of my kids. LOL. I think you will have to try different undergarments to figure out what works the best. Remember, a beige or nude colour works best under white and won't show through. Sounds very pretty.
