What are your favorite brands or products that seem to just last?

A few years ago, I found a Ryan Michael shirt at Sheplers. It was on deep sale and I have worn that thing, yearly, for the past 4 years and it still holds up. Not to light, not to heavy, cute designs, etc. I have picked up a few others as they go on sale and I have a coupon. When I went to look up prices, my jaw dropped but it was a good investment and I am always on the hunt for them.

Referring to my canning post, I have stored EVERYTHING in canning jars. I try to find some at yard sales and my favorite find was one that was over 50 years old and still going.

A small item is my garlic press. It's from 12 years ago and the only thing in my kitchen that has lasted this long. I think it was from Kitchen Aide?!? I don't know, because the name wore off.

Oh and my Jeep. Love my Jeep...they just last for me. :)

How about y'all?

Just have to share! DMIL gave me a whole box of leaded crystal serving pieces this weekend! I'm in heaven! I pick this type of thing up as I find them at garage sales, but these are special because they've been in DH's family a long time!

She also recently gave a beautiful wood bookcase with glass doors in front - lovely carving! - that has been in their family 107 years!

Guess where I put all these pretties after I washed them up and made them sparkle!

Between these pieces and the ones I already had the whole bookcase is full and I love it! I've been stopping to look and imagine what parties/dinners these items have seen - and the ones to come!

If you need a wool jacket, get one from the Bemidji woolen mill in Minnesota. I had mine for 20 years and finally replaced it last year. They make custom jackets too. Mine is heavy duty warm for our cold winters.

I have gone through four or five irons over the last thirty-seven years of marriage, but I still have the same ironing board. It is funny that one of the rubber foot has worn through and now has duct tape wrapped around to keep the leg from scratching my wood floor, but I would never think of replacing it.

I look at my husband's great aunt's set of 4 pyrex bowels we inherited. They are from the 50s and still going strong. I love them and use them occasionally.

Vanessa -- Reminds me of that old story. A young man went to work in the woods and was admiring the axe that his mentor, an elder statesman of the lumberjack trade, was wielding. "Where'd you find that wonderful axe?" he asked the older man. "Well, Son," he began, "This here axe is over a hunnert years old -- has been passed down in my family fer years and years -- generation after generation." "Wow!" said the admiring young man. "Yep," spat the veteran "She's had 3 new heads and 4 new handles."

I have a slow cooker with a 3 quart Corning Ware insert. I think that I've replaced both the bottom and lid, so it will last forever!

My iron skillet was a wedding gift in 1964. The marriage didn't survive but the skillet has.

Of course no one mentioned the old die heart of the kitchen...the cast iron skillet! How many well season skillets do you currently have in your kitchen? I have three perfect gems.

Brands...... I don't know. All the metal kitchen utensils such as a reamer, egg beater, ice cream scoop, metal pie tins/savers, blue speckled roaster, etc are still in my kitchen. Many came from my grandmothers or from garage sales.

I'm with you all on the Keens! I bought a pair up in Banff when I was on vacation about 10 years ago. They felt fabulous from the minute I put them on in the store -- walked two miles back to the hotel in them and they were like nothing I had ever felt before. I still have them and they are THE most comfy shoes ever -- they're the ones I wear on the elliptical too!

But the thing that is lasting the BEST is my old sweetheart -- 73 years old and just keeps on going and going and going and going....

I definitely agree with the older furniture. All of my sons bedroom furniture is old and passed down. His crib was my crib when I was a baby and his changing table/dresser was my grandmothers dresser when she was growing up. The dresser needed some updating so we painted it and gave it some chevron designs. When we showed it to my grandma she couldn't believe her eyes. It's crazy to think how I use this dresser multiple times a day and it's over 80 years old and it has withstood time way better then anything I could have bought new. I wish I had more things that would last.

I hear you, Jana! Things produced today are designed to fail after a certain amount of time, forcing you to buy a new product. And buying something more expensive doesn't guarantee anything unfortunately.

I keep an eye out for working older electronic items at garage sales!

Heather and rachelbee - Love the old wooden furniture! We have a few pieces and I am lucky enough to have a wizard carpenter in DH - many of the pieces in our home were built by him. His opinion of the furniture sold in stores today is not high. Even the expensive pieces are often particle board covered in veneers - not something that will last!

Great thread! Really makes you think!

Canning jars are a big one - some are pretty old too, handed down from family members.

We have two antique oil lamps that work great. And DH has a TON of tools he inherited from his grandpa - all still in use today.

We also have a large Lego set DH used to play with as a kid that DS is now happily using!

Great subject to discuss, thank you Heahter, and a conversation my husband and I just had a couple weeks ago! We are too hard on our clothing and lucky if we get two or three years wear and tear out of them. But we still have the Kitchenaid mixer and Cuisinart food processor we got as wedding gifts in 1979. My husband is using a Craftsman table saw and drill press that he inherited my dad when he passed away. The older stuff was built to last, unlike things today!

One thing I like about the Keens is that I can go wading in the river on rocks, etc., without hurting my feet and they (in our climate) dry quickly!

CJ, I agree about the Keens!! I have a pair of sandals that I bought at 7 years ago, probably a little older, they still look new, were on sale. I have 2 other pairs of keen maryjanes, one pair I bought on sale in Charleston, I have worn them over and over, are starting to get a little warn and I cannot find a matching pair anywhere :(
I did find a similar pair on clearance, not my favorite colors, but that are so comfy, who cares!!!

Also my canning jars last and last unless I break one.

My Keen sandals! First pair I've been wearing 11 years and, yes, they show some wear but they still have miles to go. I only had to replace the bungee style laces, and Keen sent me a replacement set free of charge. I'm wearing my second pair now, but they're for when I go to town or such. The older ones are my "clod-hopper" chore/yard/garden shoes for warmer weather.

I forgot to add my cowgirl boots. They have lasted me FOREVER!!! Doesn't matter the brands, anything from Sheplers, Cavenders or Boot Barn. :)

Rachel- I am finding old wooden furniture is actually priced CHEAPER than the stuff they sell, even at the high end stores. I can't wait to furnish my house with some oldies but goodies!! :)

rachelbee Posted - Aug 10 2016 : 08:01:24 AM
Real wooden furniture. We have our coffee table from before I was born, the dressers I had when I was a baby, and the rocking horse my dad made when I was a toddler, and they are all in excellent shape. It's harder and harder to buy new, solid wood furniture for a reasonable price but that particle board stuff just isn't the same.

What a great post, Heather!

Well, back in the fall of '96 I purchased two heavy weight knit mock turtle sweaters from New York & Co. that I still wear every season - talk about an investment!

I also have my great-grandmother's cast iron skillet... It's a Griswold. I use it almost every day, as did my grandmother and my great-grandmother. That had to be - oh my gosh, CAN it be? - over 100 years ago!!! WOW!!! My goodness! I never realized it, but it must be very, very old! My grandmother passed away over 15 years ago at the age of 93, and I know she had it and used it forever. I think I need to sit down... I honestly never thought about that before!

I have a few of my grandfather's Timex watches (they were his favorite!), too, and yes - they are still ticking! LOL!

I also have my grandfather's french fry cutter - has to be at least 50 years old. The gadget is AWESOME!

My husband has toy trains and buildings from when he was a child - they are over 50 years old! He has a whole room in the attic dedicated to his train set!

Oh! And you'll probably laugh, but we STILL have the McDonald's Toy Story Glasses we bought when our son was a baby... They're almost 20 years old, and we still use them every day!

My husband still has his leather biker jacket from Wilson's Leather which he wore when we met 31 years ago, and I know he had it several years before that! He still wears it in the winter!

And I have my Dad's baseball glove from when I was a kid... It's bright red (I think Dad got it because he loved the Red Socks), and the brand is Hutch. Anyhow, the mitt has to be 45 years old or more, and it has been passed down from my Dad to me, over to my husband and down to our son. We all love it and it still has a lot of life to it. Fits like a glove! ;) <<Sorry... Couldn't resist! LOL!>>

I also have my grandfather's electric hair clippers that he used when he was a barber after he retired. They are at least 50 years old, and they still work wonderfully.

My husband also has several of my paternal grandfather's pipefitting tools that my husband still used up until he had to stop working last year. And my paternal grandfather passed away over 40 years ago after having been retired twenty years! Those were DEFINTELY good investments!

Gosh, I could probably walk through every room in our home and out in the garage and list several really old, very useful things. SUCH a great feeling to be surrounded by things that so many people in our lives once enjoyed. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Heather! This was fun!

Hugs -

Nini

Heather glad you mentioned your Jeep. I bought my 1995 Mercury Cougar brand new. Still driving it with only minor repairs and the usual maintenance. I have never been one to do a lot of driving and now I don't drive out of town. This year I rolled over 51,000 miles. When I bought my car I laughed and told the salesman I would be driving it when I was 80 and in six more years I will be.
