Hi Ladies,
Never made liquid laundry soap but sure want to learn. Using it on DIRTY farm work clothes. Or do you use powder soap & mix it water??? It has to be liquid soap for our septic system to handle.

I made my first batch with 2 bars of Fels-Naptha then my 2nd with Fels-Naptha and Zote! the 2nd batch works much better!

OK I've finally taken the homemade laundry soap challenge and making my own after eons on this board for a few years. Hopefully I'll love it and see improvement in my laundry.

Hi Virginia,
We thought the same thing with the powder mixing with the water but this was our problem:
The pervious owners thought nothing of draining fatty material down the kitchen drain which slowly but for sure closed off the septic line until only a very small part of the pipe was able to work. We just laid a new septic line & we were told not to use powder soap since any undissolved soap (no matter how small) hangs up on fatty material causing huge problems.
We were told that people don't realize a little grease washed off a plate etc builds up fast.
So I sure don't want to test the theory & have to lay another new line.....I have no idea if it's true or not????
Thanks for the tip on softening clothes. They would be SOFT Will give that a try!

I use the same recipe Danyel posted, except I always use it dry. We're on a septic system, too, and I see no reason why the soap has to be liquid. It's the same stuff, once it mixes with the water in the washing machine. Am I missing something? I do know you shouldn't use chlorine bleach, which I never use.
Anyway, in a recent thread on this general subject, a farmgirl sister mentioned using epsom salts as a fabric softener. Like a lot of us, I use felted wool dryer balls in my dryer for this purpose, and I find that white vinegar in a couple of Downey fabric softener balls does a good job. (Those go in the wash, not the dryer, obviously -- you can buy the balls empty, two to a pack, for a couple of bucks and reuse them indefinitely.) I have to tell you I really noticed a big improvement in the fresh smell and softness of my clothing with the epsom salts, so I've started adding about a cup of that to the basic recipe. It's so cheap. I got a giant bag for less than a dollar.

Hi Judy,
fels naphta may be a strong soap for getting rid of dirt, but not on the skin, my daughter and I have been blessed with sensitive skin and if I use store bought laundry detergent we end up dry and itchy even with a second rinse.
Some of my friends have replaced it with ivory soap, they say it works fine.
Super washing soda is with the laundry supplies in our stores.
however if you look on the chat site here at the farm you will see under the "Make it easy" category that our farmgirl sister Nini has the steps for turning regular baking soda into super washing soda. great price break! I want to try instead of purchasing super washing soda.
also for more ideas on some discussions of laundry detergent look under the category " cleaning up" there is a discussion from a while back on different recipes from our farmgirl sisters. ( its on the first page that pops up about the 8th item down)

--I gather fels naphta soap is strong??? Just so I can replace it with something else
--what do you mean by super washing soda???

I make the liquid, it use more on hubbies work clothes, they end up with black grim ground in. and for an extra boost I use the liquid oxiclean that was features in the monthly cluck, wow what a boost.
The recipe I use calls for
2 bars fels naphta grated mixed with about 5 quart boiling water in an 11 quart plastic dish pan.
then 2 cups borax, and 2 cups super washing soda. then add more hot water to about an inch from the top stir until everything is dissolved.
I let it set overnight, mix with an old mixer or wooden spoon, place into 12 mason jars.
to use add 2 quart warm water to one quart laundry detergent. I mix mine up in an old gallon ice cream container, use one laundry cap.
if you let it set overnight it gets thick like the store bought. but remains liquid and will stay like that until you can use it all.
