. . . go "south"!
When we had to rebuild our house after losing it in a fire in July 1994 I decided I didn't want to go the "curtains or drapes" route for our windows. I had already learned about Crystalpleat blinds and really liked them, so that is what we ordered for all of our windows, custom fit. They are "honeycomb" construction with some insulating qualities against heat or cold and they do work . . we really like them.
However, after 18-19 years of constant up and down and adjusting of some of them, especially in the living room, kitchen and dining room, the cords have worn out and no longer work.
I didn't want to replace the blinds, they are still perfectly good and functional. Didn't want the expense of possible "re-cording" them. So I bought 1-inch wide ecru colored grosgrain ribbon, cut in lengths to go over the top of the metal bar at the top and down both sides so that I could tie them up and long enough that the blind could be at different levels.
I used Aleene's 7800 Premuium Platinum bond adhesive to glue the ribbon to the front of the top metal bar so they didn't slip around and am happy with the result and don't have to replace the blinds.
We're happy!

Terri, I know what you mean. Some of ours had one side all the way up and the other side down or part way down and the cords broken and nothing moved. I had to do something! I just pulled as much of the cord as I could and then just cut them off . . . severed! End of story.
I have to manually "pleat" the blinds up but it's not a problem at all!
We REALLY like our Crystalpleat blinds!

Great idea! I have those blinds all over my living room and dining room but there is one window with a broken chain so the blind stays at half mast all the time. I am going to try your idea.

Thanks for the idea, I may need to use it on ours in a few years. The cord is slowly disintegrating. I made the curtains in our bedroom this way. They look like a valance most of the time, but in the summer I can let them down to keep the hot sun out of the room. |
