Posted - Apr 09 2012 : 05:17:23 AM Tip: I was just told by someone who spoke to a local Goodwill clerk - people shop at her Goodwill every to sell stuff on ebay. Shop local first or at other thrift stores first. You are probably over paying on ebay. Just thought I'd share.
I know there are rare items on ebay too, but wanted to let you know. I found an antique tablecloth at a thrift store for $3.00 and a hand woven tote bag for $1.50 (retail: $22-25.00) recently.

Posted - Apr 11 2012 : 5:09:50 PM The only things we buy on ebay are, believe it or not, parts for farm equipment. A cylinder head for a pettybone skidder (type of tractor that pulls wood out of a forest. No they don't use them on any of the logging shows)that would normally cost over $500 new and $200-300 used, my dh paid $19 a piece for 4 of them. It just depends on what you're looking for and the availability of things in your area. If you can get it cheaper in your area, fine. If you can't, that's ok too.

Posted - Apr 10 2012 : 1:50:37 PM I spend very little time on ebay . . . doing the bidding on an auction item drives me nuts! We only shop there for items we probably can't find around here. I'm totally happy shopping at our local thrift stores . . . have three good ones. CJ

Posted - Apr 10 2012 : 08:00:09 AM I always check the thrift stores first. Alot of antique dealers out here shop them as well and resell the items in their shops or booths. Unless there is something in particular I am looking for I don't always shop E-bay.

Posted - Apr 10 2012 : 07:29:37 AM I love the prairie skirts I've seen on ebay, but would rather buy from a farmgirl instead. Boy, I can't wait to get down another size or two.
When hubby and I go on day trips and weekend getaways, the first place we shop is the thrift store. :)

Posted - Apr 09 2012 : 09:54:40 AM EXCELLENT post, Kristina! Thank you!!!
Yep - a girl my hubby works with does this all the time. She makes a nifty little side income by so doing. She has an entire shopping system worked out, and she makes really good money on quality items that others simply cast away. Last summer she told me about a really "good" Goodwill store in a more affluent section of Pittsburgh. I bought some fine quality skirts and tops for $1 a piece, as well as a brand new Steeler's jersey with the tags still on for $4 (retail would've been $60!), and you'd never know any of these items were from a thrift store! I was thrilled! My girlfriend's daughter bought a high-quality designer wool coat that was practically brand new for just $6 - it was nicer than anything we had seen in the malls, and the price couldn't be beat!
The thing about ebay is that you're not only paying for the mark-up, you're also paying for their fees, because a seller isn't going to take those out of his profit. Then when you tack on shipping, it can get even more expensive. You are probably still getting a good deal on ebay, but if you can shop around and find a good local thrift store, you're probably saving a LOT more money.

Posted - Apr 09 2012 : 08:40:36 AM Your right about over pricing on eBay. Especially with the shipping. Goodwill used to sell vases full of jewelry, but now they only sell jewelry on eBay or on their own auction site. People pay thru the nose for it because they think they are going to strike it rich with gold and silver. What a crock. I shop at Goodwill, but only buy the half price items and then on Sundays whatever the color of the week was it becomes 99 cents. Goodwill has inflated their prices in order to build all the new stores that are going up. Jeans used to be 3.00 now are 5.99. It's nuts. I am so glad garage sale season is here.

Posted - Apr 09 2012 : 08:04:07 AM I do know our local Goodwill, AND Salvation Army sells certain items on EBAY. I've spoke with the managers at both stores and they both admit to it. They just make more money that wat. We have several good communiity thrift stores here and that is where I tend to shop. The prices are better and the selection is pretty good.

Posted - Apr 09 2012 : 06:13:42 AM Thrift stores are great. I have found a lot of things that are worth a lot more then I paid for them. In fact the Mc Coy piece I have pictured on my blog, is worth more then fifty dollars, found that out on a McCoy site. I think I paid like a dollar for it.. Nancy Jo
