I'm trying to figure out what I can use this for. I've tried crocheting with it but it's too stiff. (My grand idea for a grocery bag bit the dust.) We always have a little left on a roll after hay baling and I would like to get some ideas for using it up.

Its a fashion statement here at our farm....haha... my husband, his buddies all have a piece of it stuck in their back pockets. I always have to check before doing laundry! I asked once if it was a dress code or something and the guys replied " you never know when you'll need to tie something up..." So around here, it's farm couture! HAHA! Butboy if I could crochet, I'd so make a rug out of it.... great great idea.

You could create fencing and trellises with it, follow the instructions for tying either a hammock or a fish net. . . a simple knot with great end results.

I read somewhere to run it like a cob web over the top of your chicken coop run area to keep the hawks out. So far I have had good luck with it.

Wow, thanks for all the ideas. I knew I would get some good ones from you all. I may try my hand at the braided mat. It would really be sturdy for outdoors. Catherine, I have the shorter pieces from the hay bales too but I think they would work for making a mat.

Those twines are like duct tape for me. I have some stored all over the farm. It's amazing how handy they can be. Like Teresa, I use them for tying plants/branches, quick halter/collar, pig snout tie, mending wire fencing, tying down tarps, etc...
I went back and read your post and you're talking about a having a lot left over from bailing hay. I thought you were talking about the 4-5ft strings cut off square bales. You do have a lot!
Beth's idea of using a large hook sounds good. What about braiding the strings and making a braided mat?

It is stiff to crochet with but I use a huge crochet hook and it works pretty good. I do door mats.

Tying up plants, emergency halter or collar, braid into door mats, bundleing branches, newspapers etc, let your imagination go.
