Mine went through a TOO HOT dryer, now it fits my Grandaughter ...Is there a MJ issue with suggestions in it?
Or what do you all suggest...?

Jumping in, I make winter hats and matching mittens with them.... scour the thift stores (GW has a lot here) take them home and shrink them down. For the hats i use a pattern that looks like a triangle but is rounder on the sides instead of straight, cut out 4 or 5 depending on who the hat is for and sew them together, i try to use the patterns in the wool as the bottom brim part. For mittens I use the sleeves if the wrist part has a pattern to make matching sets, if not then any ol part thats left works just fine too.

In fact I recently washed/dried a mohair blanket...oh duh!

I read someplace that you can make a turtleneck-type "sweater" for a hot-water bottle :} I second the mitten idea; you can also cut them into pieces to make children's stuffed toys.

Deborah, my little sister likes to cruise thrift stores for old, ugly, or motheaten wool sweaters, felt them, and cut mittens out of them, too! She just whip-stitches them together with yarn and voila: adorable, super-warm mittens! I think she might line hers with fleece, too. In fact, I should probably go ask for a pair from her - she owes me a christmas present still. :) |

I am making mittens out of the sweaters I have washed and dried....They are really warm and nice. I thought I might put some fleece in one pair to see how it does.

also lisa, if they dont felt enough just try try again. and make sure there is a considerable difference between the wash and rinse temperature.

Warning: her books are great and her website is just as addicting as this one. I've also been buying sweaters at the thrifts and felting them on purpose for projects. (Lisa, in order to get them to felt right Betz says you have to be sure there is no more than 20% non-wool in them but to be safe I always get 100% wool.)

This is so funny. I, on purpose, bought 100% wool sweaters at the thrift, washed them & dried them TRYING to get them to felt & all they did was shrink a little! |

I was just at some resale stores today, just to buy some wool things. I got 2 mens jackets and a womens pair of pants and a sweater. I wash them and dry then on purpose to felt them and then applique with the fabric. or rug hook or make mittens or purses or or or etc... you get the idea. so just say you did it on purpose and go from there.....

mary beth is right! you can make just about anything with felted wool. but be aware that it is addictive and it will take over your life,...and living room...and bedroom...and craftroom!

Repurpose your washed wool sweater and make a purse or just about anything. It is called felting.
google felting and you will find a ton of stuff.

May I suggest you pick up a quilting magazine or go online to a quilting website and find yourself a pattern for a lovely table runner or pillows made from felted wool. If you need more wool, go to a thrift store, i.e., Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, etc., and buy 100% wool suits, (mens or ladies), and wash it in hot water and "felt" it also! You can do amazing things with it! Good luck. |

If the sweater is wool it probably felted. I would give it to your granddaughter! Not too much to do in that case. If it's not wool, you can try rewetting it and blocking it on a towel laid on a flat surface. Gently pull to increase the size and let it dry flat. Good luck to you!
Or if it is felted, you can always make something else out of the fabric. Cut and sew into little purses, or eyeglass cases, or liners for potholders, etc. |
