Last summer I found a huge patio swing by the dumpster and had to pick it up. It is one of those framed ones with canvas as the chair and back. It should have cushions as well but they were missing and the canvas back and bottom was torn. I want to recover the frame and make cushions for it.
I was thinking about using denim were the canvas was since I have tons of it and can get more at the thrift store super cheap but my neighbor thinks I should use canvas maybe I could find a canvas tarp. Would the denim work?? or do I need the canvas for strength and duarbility??
I think I should be able to make the cushions out of almost anything right as long as it is sturdy ?

Lorie...We had a swing like the one you are talking about that needed recovering...I got some heavy fabric (like denim) and took 2 days to recover it...it looked great until the rain came and all the other outdoor dirt. I have now found some fabric that is similar to the fabric that is on the outside chairs you see at WalMart and such. Unless you will be having your swing out of the weather I would never cover in fabric again. JoAnnes has the fabric I am talking about and not to expensive. I hope this helps...Tami |

Diana do you think the denim would stretch too much?? what if I sewed it in panels with opposing grain? Would that help with the stretch? |

Denim stretches more that canvas.

Can you use the idea of the oilcloth that MJ gave in her last magazine issue and "oilcloth" the denim to make it more waterproof???

I would use the denim that you already have. It probably has a stronger weave than a canvas tarp. |

I think that canvas has a oil base, so that it doesnt absorb moisture, where denium will... but other than that, I think the denium would be so cute....
