Posted - Jan 30 2009 : 2:30:17 PM I have all the fixing to make it! Why do some recipes call for Fels-Naptha soap, etc. and like MJ's does not. Some postings say Fels-Naptha has some harsh chemicals? I have the fixing to use it! Soooo confused!

Posted - Jan 30 2009 : 1:25:13 PM My SIL lives near Lehman's so I may ask her to get this for me to try when I visit them in a few months. Right now I'm using the Walmart brand detergent because it is 11 cents per load and is a Consumer Reports best buy. I just worry about the whites getting white with the homemade detergent. Still, I'm happy to try!
Blessings! ~Farrah

Posted - Jan 30 2009 : 1:19:31 PM In my excitement of running through the posts, I probably missed something, but has anyone used it in a front loading High Efficiency washer? Right now I only can use HE detergent, but would love to try this is I can.

Posted - Jan 30 2009 : 08:23:05 AM I am liking mine so far. Suzanne, that sounds like what my friend used in hers that she gave me. I will be washing lots of clothes today and I hope to be able to hang them all out, too. I'll use the vinegar for the rinse, too. I still have to wait for the drain pipes to thaw out. So it may be this afternoon before I can wash.

Posted - Jan 30 2009 : 07:08:18 AM There's another thread on the forum about laundry soap. I'm going to post here what I posted there.
I make my own laundry soap from scratch using lard, borax, ammonia, essential oils of lemon and orange, lye and water. It's my grandma's recipe, except for the EOs. She used it on her floors and for laundry. It works so well and the clothes smell clean, not like overpowering synthetic cancer causing fragrance.
I woke up on January 1st and it was 2009. And it's been that way ever since!

Posted - Jan 26 2009 : 1:54:11 PM I use Kirk's Castile soap for my laundry soap, I can get it for cheaper than Fels and if I recall correctly there's something about chemicals in Fels that I read about in another laundry soap thread on the board. You can also order Kirk's online and it still comes out pretty cheap. http://www.kirksnatural.com/

Posted - Jan 25 2009 : 2:09:59 PM I had to add one more gallon of water and now I think it's good. Kind of slimy looking now, but gelling again. I found a big 5 gallon bucket with a lid to put most of it in and a gallon jug for every day use. I just tried some in a load of towels.
So I think I ended up with 6 gallons of soap. I still have a brand new box of Tide I'll probably use on our jeans, so I should be set on laundry soap for what, about a year or so? We'll see.

Posted - Jan 25 2009 : 07:38:37 AM I can get Fels Naptha for 99 cents at my local mom & pop grocer. I will go in and buy it in bulk and ship it out to those of you that want some. I should think that I caould fit about 5-6 bars in a priority box for 4.85.... and I could probably send 1-2 in a bubble envelope for $2-3. Send me an email if you are interested. Oh, yeah, the Kirks Castile Soap and Zote is there too.... for about 1.29 each.

Posted - Jan 24 2009 : 10:20:04 PM Kristin- in the future- if it gels on you (gets thick) that is okay too! Just scoop it out with a table spoon and use a few table spoons or about a quarter cup. Just think of it as more concentrated! :D

Posted - Jan 24 2009 : 10:16:20 PM Well, now that I have the bread conquered, guess I'll have to try this as well. I found everything but the Fels soap so I grabbed a bar of Zote soap for this go-round. I know that Lehmans carries it so if I don't find it at some of the other stores, guess I'll have to order it the next time. Here's the link to Lehmans: http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=2059&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=673&iSubCat=674&iProductID=2059
It sounds like I'll have plenty to last quite a while though (once I get it made). Maybe I'll come across some in the meantime. Don't forget to check the thrift stores. It's amazing what some people will donate!

Posted - Jan 24 2009 : 7:33:19 PM This one gallon has now turned into almost 5 gallons! I have been working on this nearly all day. My husband has seen it a few times and he says it's growing! It's in a different pot each time he saw it. I think I should not have put so much of the powderin. It first turned like body butter looking. I had put it out on the back porch to cool and in about an hour it had turned thick. So added another 2 gallons of water. Then the next time I had to get out my big hot water bath canner. I just left it in the kitchen. Maybe it won't get so thick this time so fast.
I sure hope this stuff works. I won't have to buy any washing soap for a year.

Posted - Jan 24 2009 : 11:43:56 AM I am making my soap right now. A friend gave me a spoon full of the already mixed oil-shortening type soap plus a baggie of the borax-washing powder. I added that to a gallon of boiling water and stirred to dissolve, then added the hard soap and mixed til it was all dissolved. Now I am waiting on it to cool and see what the consistancy is. She said if it's too thick I mught need to boil some more water and add it all to that and go from there. She kind of did this all without a recipe, so I really don't know what all is in there. When I get it almost done, I'll add some scent to it. But it looks good so far. I am so exited to have gotten this and actually making it.
I wish I could see pictures of anyone's liquid soap to see if mine looks right. I just checked it and it's about the consistancy of shampoo.

Posted - Jan 23 2009 : 08:52:23 AM Thanks Alee! I will order me some this weekend. I checked at the grocery stores around here, but they don't carry it and people look at me crazy when I ask them if they've heard of it. And why I didn't think about trying to find it on the internet, I don't know! Thanks, Tammy

Posted - Jan 22 2009 : 8:27:47 PM Okay I'm really jealous! I have looked everywhere for Fels-Naptha soap and can't find it anywhere. We have octagon soap around here. Can you use that? Would anyone be willing to get me three or four bars if I send them the money & shipping? Alot of my gardening concoctions call for it as well and I've yet to find any!
