I just accidentally posted this in "kitchen", so will put info here:
www.imagecascade.com has wonderful books for young girls, although I still enjoy them myself at 43 - specifically books about "Beany Malone" by Lenora Mattingly Weber - this website has all her books and many others that are great written in the 40's, 50's and 60's for girls. I sincerely hope you will look at them and give them a try!
