This is about TV, not books, but I must encourage all of you to watch TNT's six week series called Into The West. I watched the first episode twice this week-end and it is so good!

It is produced by Steven Speilberg and is really well done. If you love stories about the West, if you love Dances With Wolves, watch this! It is probably the best summer TV there is.

My hubby and I saved our Saturday evening to watch the second part of this series. We went out for salad and pizza and came home to cozy up on the sofa to watch Into The West. Parts of it broke my heart but I know life was exactly this way as the pioneers moved west. Wow, it took one heck of a woman to make that trip and still live a good life. Even today, when I meet women whose ancestors came from California and throughout the western states, icluding the prairie states such as Kansas, I see that strength and perservance and "go-getter" attitude. It lives on generations later! I figure they come from that stock that made it and were stronger for it.

I am especially glad that it has been on for each installment in three day time blocks so you can pick when to watch. I do wish that it was on like in the "mini series" days where there was a week or so that the story ran seamlessly. I didn't get to see all of part II until last night and it left me wanting more. What a plot twist to end with this segment! That's the sign of good story telling , when you want the story to go on and on.Hope some more of you got to watch it!

Clare - TNT is part of our basic cable, too, but I know what you mean about waiting to see some things that everyone is talking about. There are many series on HBO that I have never seen, and I even read on this site about good PBS series that never reach our station. I am sure this will come out in DVD soon. My husband wanted to see Band of Brothers, and it eventually came out for purchase/rent.

Clare--TNT is basic cable here too! We watched it on Saturday night and I thought it was very well done also. It kept the action adventure movie guys who were here entertained so...I'd say it's a success! I especially liked the two sided perspective approach so that both cultures are represented in a truthful light. I am looking forward to future episodes.

It's on TNT. Isn't that basic cable some places? I know it isn't here 'in the sticks' but most places basic cable is much better than ours. We have satellite because DH got it one day. Not sure why. He doesn't watch any sports. It's a mystery.........................

Gemerally speaking, I'm fine having only basic cable. It's times like this when there's an exceptional program presented that I'm a bit envious. Guess I'll wait for the video version to hit the stores. Hope it doesn't take forever.

I also watched it and enjoyed it very much. So far it seems to be pretty authentic and well done. I hope that it continues to show so much of the beauty and beliefs of the Native American culture. I am the descendent of people who came over the Oregon trail in 1847 and I'm very glad they did but it saddens me to know how much we(the whites)took from the Indians and what we did to them. Just my opinion....please let's NOT start a discussion about this.
