I was looking for a list of the top 100 books. I couldn't really find anything on an American website but I did find one on the BBC website of the top 100 books.
I found that I had recently (last 10 years or so) read about 24 of the books and could remember what was in them. I had read many more (probably high school or college) and since I couldn't remember much of anything about them, I will reread.
I am determine to get thru this list before I die. Hopefully that will be a long time because it is going to take me awhile what with all the wonderful "new" books on the shelves.
As Thomas Jefferson said, "I cannot live without books." And I say, I wouldn't want to.

I have read a lot of these books too. I always have at least three or four books going at a time. One is a religious theme, one is cooking or the home, one is about teaching (right now the one I am reading is about homework and whether we need it or not) and a novel.
I cannot imagine a day without good food, good books, love and sewing.

So many wonderful reads there - made me think of all my regular re-reads. Does anyone else have these - books that you just re-read every couple of years cause you love them so much? Think it is nearly time to give Tess of the Dúrebevilles another run and Wuthering Heights. One of my other favourites is To Kill a Mockingbird - also love Gregory Peck in the movie - fabulous.
I was surprised to see so many Jacqueline Wilson books on the list - obviously lots of pre-teens/teens voting. My oldest reads those at school (I try to steer her away if possible - pretty inane).
Dare I bring up Harry Potter?! I must admit I am excited that the last one is coming out July 21. But I can't believe the number of chat rooms devoted to it, and the depth of study these people have put into the books.

That brought back some fond memories of past reads. It looks like I am going to have to read Harry Potter though. I find it hard to believe that Tom Sawyer is not on there. Of the ones I have read, I would The Thorn Birds is my favorite. Thanks for the list.

Oh cool. I am surprised by how many of them I have actually read! That makes for a much shorter list! :) I might have to choose one of these for my next turn at book group this year. Next month is at mine, but I have already planned on a Night With the Bard- we are performing The Taming of the Shrew!! It should be a hoot.
