I wasn't actually sure where to post this, but I'm just so excited I had to let you know...this coming Saturday I'm be going to be in the audience for the broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion! My husband and I have been fans of the radio show for a few years now, and I often use Garrison Keillor's "Writer's Almanac" with my middle school English classes. Since we got the tickets by making a pledge to our local public radio station, we also get to attend a post-show "meet and greet" with the cast/crew. There's no guarantee that Garrison himself will be there, but apparently he has been very gracious about it in the past, so I am taking along my copies of Good Poems and Homegrown Democrat in the hopes of getting to chat with him for a few moments and have him sign them for me! I'm a dork, I know...but hopefully I'll have some pictures to share after this weekend!

Hey! I listened to the Buffalo show, too! My sister and I were driving into Chicago to go to the theatre, and it was like two treats in one, to be able to listen to PHC on the way in!! How special your night must have been, actually to meet the Garrison himself!!

I listened yesterday too! What fun to know you were there and you were having a fantastic time! It was a good one too, loved his descriptions of Buffallo and the people that live there. He is always a hoot and I'm glad the whole experience didn't disappoint!

I listened to your show last night!! It must have been a great time. I thought of you when I was listening. Glad you got to go and especially that you got to meet him.

I am an English teacher too!! 7th and 8th grade now (did hs for a bunch of years before though).

Hey everyone,

Wow, thanks for all the replies - I knew I couldn't be the only GK/PHC fan around here ;-) So we went to the show last night (it was the Buffalo show, not the NYC show - those are coming up over the next three weeks). How absolutely fantastic! The best part of the night for me, however, was the post-show reception. Garrison came in about an hour after the show and did a little impromptu Q&A - what a down-to-earth guy he is. Then, he went off to mingle, and I got to meet him! I asked him to sign my copy of Good Poems (which he did, of course) and we chatted for a bit - I told him I'm an English teacher and he wanted to know all about it :-) I felt truly in awe of the whole experience.

Us too! We always stop what we are doing on Saturday night at 6:00 put our feet up and have our weekly "cocktail". I have listened since before I was married and was just tickled that my husband listened too! Our son has grown up listening and singing "Bee Bop A Ree Bop Rhubarb Pie" and it is very funny to watch the little guy attempt to do his funky baby dance to it! Son #1's favorite are the joke shows that air once or twice a year. I have to say that "The News From Lake Wobegon" and the musical guests are my favorite. The Wailing Jenny's have amazing harmony! I would love to see the program in person but enjoy steppping back and taking things slower on Saturday. If we miss, we get to listen again on Sunday, lucky us!

with a happy heart

Every Saturday evening as I prepare dinner, I tune in to listen to PHC. I really have fun cooking listening to GK he reminds me of my family in WI. My family and I enjoy the news from Lake Wobegon as we eat our dinner. Dawn in IL

My kids grew up on PHC. I have all the tapes and CDs and when my kids could not sleep, they would listen at night. We used to listen on car rides as a family and of course we listen every Saturday night. We have been to a few shows in NYC...what a great, old-fashioned evening of entertainment for the family. GK gave my kids presents on the last night of his Christmas show one year. We just happened to be hanging around in the auditorium after the show and he gave my kids the wrapped boxes they kept on the stage. Turns out that there were PHC tee shirts in them and my kids were excited beyond belief. They are in college now and still remember that night! Enjoy!! Sheryl-lyn

I love PHC! They came to Hot Springs about 2 summers ago and tickets sold out in a matter of hours. I had really wanted to go but we weren't able to get tickets. We listened when it aired on NPR though! So funny! I haven't seen the movie yet though. They had a special on this sumer and one of the groupd they had on was called "Wailin' Jenny's" they are SOOOOOO good. I just downloaded both of their cds to my ipod (xmas gift from Richie!) and they are great! I know both CDs are on download on emusic.com and they have 25 free downloads for new members right now. I got my 25 downloads then cancelled my membership and wasn't charged anything!

Jewelry, art, baskets, etc.

We saw GK a couple of years ago at the Houston Symphony. We love PHC here! Love the movie - it would be fun to see the show live!

Fun! I've been to the show at the Fitz twice and once at the State Fair. We're huge PHC fans around here. My husband has read all of Garrison's books too. You will have a GREAT time, especially since GK considers New York his second home!

Tasha - I use that "all the women are strong..." bit just about every time I sign off on the phone with my Mom after giving her our family update!

And here's another one I love and know you all do too:

I love Guy Noir, Private Eye! We have lousy reception where I am for the NPR stations, we're 70 miles or more from most of them, and I'm not always near the computer to get it over the internet, so I don't always listen to it every Saturday, but you know you can listen to archived shows on the PHC website.

I am so jealous!

Oooooo! I'm a big fan! We both are, since the late 1970s, when my husband and I lived in a little coachhouse and listened to PHC every Saturday night. We know the words to 'Powdermilk Biscuits' by heart and sing along with gusto. Have a great time!
GaiasRose Posted - Nov 28 2006 : 3:48:54 PM
what kind of Minnesota Democrat would I be if I didn't love PHC and weren't a fan of Garrison Keillor? I read his column each week in the OPEX in the Strib.....

Have fun!

I told ROb we have to go sometime for an anniversary or something, here at home of course at the Fitz.
