Posted - Jul 25 2015 : 1:37:59 PM Our family are JRR Tolkien fans and have the Lord of the Rings trilogy book as well as "The Hobbit". And, we've seen all the movies, more than once except for the last one in the Hobbit series.
We saw the "Battle of Five Armies" with our daughter and son-in-law last year when it was in theaters in December. After that my daughter challenged me, and herself, to read "The Hobbit" this year. I've read the trilogy through twice . . she has yet to read that one. We are both getting close to meeting the goal of the challenge of reading "The Hobbit" long before the year is up.
I now need to purchase the DVD of the "Battle . . . " for our collection and so we can watch it again!
Then, maybe I'll start reading the trilogy again . . hmmmmmm! CJ

Posted - Aug 11 2015 : 10:27:52 AM That is a good memory, Judy! :D I haven't gotten any further in the book yet. Summer doesn't really provide much reading time with all the outside work that has to be done! So, it may wait until late fall and winter! CJ

Posted - Aug 07 2015 : 6:28:16 PM I read The Hobbit to my kids (they were 11 and 13 at the time--in the '70's). My son said he remembers them sitting under a tree in the yard snapping beans for me while I read the book to them. A good memory.

Posted - Jul 26 2015 : 3:39:05 PM I'm about 3/4 way through "The Hobbit" . . . enjoying it! Enjoyed the trilogy book as well! Love the movies even if they aren't exact to the books! :D My daughter and I think that Tolkien's imagination probably drove his parents crazy when he was growing up!

Posted - Jul 26 2015 : 04:09:38 AM CeeJay, you're love The Hobbit. In the 70's I started with The Hobbit and than read the Trilogy. Seen the movies and now watch them again on TV. Had a grey Persian cat I named Gandalf. Best cat I ever had.
A side note: Ian McClellan, who played Gandalf is now the new Sherlock Holmes. The Sherlock Holmes stories are another must read.

Posted - Jul 25 2015 : 5:41:40 PM Dawn, My hubby, too, is a fan. He read the books long, long ago, as well as some of the less popular Tolkien books.
I haven't read the Brooks books . . . have to keep that in mind too! CJ

Posted - Jul 25 2015 : 4:50:31 PM We love the "Lord of the Rings" books too. I read "The Hobbit" back in high school. I enjoyed it so much that I moved on to the rest of Tolkien's books. My husband is a huge fan and has all kinds of different books, videos, and dvd's of the series. My husband is a scientist and I swear all the scientists are Tolkien fans. They all have chosen names from the books for their computers. It got so bad that computer support requested they quit doing that!
Have fun reading the books! By the way, have you ever read Terry Brooks "Shannara" series? They are superb too!
