All this chat with you wonderful ladies sent me to my bookshelves to dig out one of my favorites to share with you all. For any of you that enjoy historical fiction this book was great...O Pioneers! by Willa Cather.
Its a story about pioneer life and a woman who makes her family farm prosperous in Nebraska. I saw the movie first on Hallmark Channel and had to read the book(which of course is better).
Enjoy!

Hi Bonnie:

My sister-in-law moved up to Chestertown (right above Lake George) when she retired from teaching. I go up there all the time. My son is at New Paltz (in college) and I love it there too. My husband and I would love to move upstate when we retire also. We love Long Island, but wish to have mountains around us. Enjoy the weekend!!

Hi Shery-lyn,
We are almost at opposite ends of the state, but it sounds pretty much the same. This used to be farm country, but more and more of the farmers are selling out to housing developments. I am about an half hour away from the Finger Lakes wine country.
I have a nephew-in-law from Long Island, who brought just about his whole family up here when they bought their house.
Have a nice day!

Hi Bonnie:

I live on eastern Long Island, way out in farm country. We have a lot of very cool farmstands, corn mazes, pumpkin and Christmas tree farms. The newest thing here is also the winery business. Seems we grow great wine grapes like California and France. In addition to the farms, we are also a growing area that has every store you can imagine, etc. No one out on Long Island is remote at all, even if they live on a huge farm. How is it by you?

My Antonia by Willa Cather is a good read too; O Pioneers is just my favorite!

I have wanted to read "O Pioneers" - the only Willa Cather book I've read is "Death Comes for the Archbishop," and I just loved it. She has the ability with her writing to make it so I can really "see" the story in my mind (if that makes sense...).

I'm also adding Sarah Orne Jewett to the list of authors I want to check out..

Thanks for the great information!

XOXO, Libbie

Oh! Thank you! I have never heard of the book or author, I will check it out!
Sheryl-lyn, are you down-state? I am in western NY.

Sarah Orne Jewett is another writer you all might enjoy if you like Willa Cather! THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS is excellent.

I love O Pioneers! I saw the Hallmark Channel presentation with Glenn Close. It was brilliant. Great suggestion for winter reading!!

I got My Antonia last week at the thrift store. Can't wait to read it. I studied Cather in college one summer, in Kansas.

I'll add a book that farmgirls may like, although it might be hard to find: High Divide: Minnie Peterson's Olympic Mountain Adventures by Gary L. Peterson and Glynda Peterson Schaad. I found it when we traveled through Washington this summer.

Here's a book blurb: Among th women of the 20th century American West, a few lived extraordinary lives. With tempered steel in their character, they were loved by some, admired by most, and respected by all. This collection of stories, documents and photographs provides a window into the past of one of these special women, a glimpse into her life and times.

Minnie was a woman who created, owned and operated her own business that catered to tourists of the Olympic Mountain Peninsula. She carried them on horseback excursions into the Olympic Mountains, places that were and still can't be easily traveled to. The book is filled with lots of pictures and personal stories.

Well worth the 19.95 and a great read!
