Posted - Aug 30 2013 : 4:30:33 PM "A Lantern in Her Hand" by Bess Streeter Aldrich is set in the 1870's. The place is Nebraska. It is about family life and facing hardships such as blizzards, hostile Indians, fires and illness. It's a book of faith, hard work, and hope.
Bess also wrote "A White Bird Flying". It continues on with the story of the same family. She also wrote some short stories. I have the Bess Streeter Aldrich Reader that includes all of these. The library here had all of the books she wrote. I don't know if they still do since I have read them all.
They really are worth reading. I enjoyed them very much.
