Hi girls -
I'm hoping you can help me. I have been searching for years for a book that I loved as a young child, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name. My mother purchased it for me when I was in grade school through the Weekly Reader book offers. It was a beautifully illustrated, soft-cover book (I think...), and read as if spoken in the first person, narrated by the main character. It's about a young man who is born in a very young America, works the field, falls in love, marries, becomes a father, goes to war (I think in the Revolutionary War, but it could've been another battle), dies and is laid to rest under a tree. I believe it might be called, "The Ballad of...." but I cannot for the life of me remember it. I think MAYBE it was "The Ballad of Billy <something>," but I cannot for the life of me remember for sure. It may not have even been titled "The Ballad of <anything>," but it surely was a ballad. I absolutely loved that book, and would love to add it to my collection to share with the kids in our life. Does any of this ring a bell with you? If you recall such a book, any lead that you might provide would be wonderful! I have been slowly adding to my collection over the years, but this one keeps eluding me!

I FOUND IT!!! OMGosh - it must be the luck of the farmgirls on my side!!!
The title of the book is, "The Ballad of William Sycamore," by Stephen Vincent Benet and illustrated by Brinton Turkle. Found it on www.oldchildrensbooks.com
HIGHLY recommend this site! I've been looking for this book for over 16 years!!! I just LOVE this book - SO excited - cannot WAIT for it to arrive!!! I was wrong, though - it's about a pioneer on the frontier rather than about a Revolutionary War hero... Sorry bout that. But oh my - I am so excited to have found it!!! YAY!!!

You know, another book I loved was "Miss Suzy" - it was about a squirrel who loved her home in an old tree, but was cast out by some villainous squirrels. She found shelter in a doll house and saved a box of tin soldiers from storage... the story goes from there. I can still hear my mother's voice as she read the part about Miss Suzy telling the soldiers about her house. She would say, "And a big tear rooooooooooooolled down her cheek." Got me every time. I found it on Amazon recently and was absolutely thrilled! Couldn't remember the name of it for the life of me for years. Now I have both of these wonderful stories, and was blessed to have shared them with my wide-eyed foster grandkids at Easter. Oh my - they just kept having me read them over and over and over. So funny, isn't it, how in this insane techno-age we live in, little ones today still love cuddling in our laps and having a cherished story read to them! Makes me so happy!

My favorite book was "A Child's Garden of Verses." I can still recite some of the poems in their entirety.
For Christmas, my parents gave me a bock with 365 stories (1 a day) to read. Each story was just a page or two long. I loved that book. I also liked Black Beauty because I was a serious horse fan.

I feel your excitement! My favorite book growing up was "Walk, Rabbit, Walk", which I had my Papaw read to me a million times plus. I found the hardback copy on Amazon. Makes me so happy every time I read it.
