I always have a stack of books and catalogs accumulating on my bedside table. I noticed yesterday that my recent stack is an interesting combination of classic, high-tech, old-world, and gardener: "MaryJane's IdeaBook" (of course), Burpee Seed Catalog, "Digitizing Made Easy", and "Designing with the Wool".

Reflecting my daft ADD personality, I've got Catherine the Great, 500 Acres and No Place To Hide, Game Change, The Total Money Makeover and Delirium: How the Sexual Counterrevolution is Polarizing America. Oh yeah, and the new Johnny's Seed Catalog. Sheesh! I don't know how my husband stands living with me!!!

Only two books right now! That's probably a low for me, usually I'm reading more! I'm reading Catching Fire (the second Hunger Games book) and P.S. I Love You. P.S. I Love You is one of my favorite movies, so I felt really inclined to read the book, and so far, it's worth the read!

I've always wanted to read The Screwtape Letters, is it pretty good? A lot of my friends read it but for some reason I haven't made time to read it. I've gotten mixed reactions to it, some friends loved it, some didn't and some didn't know what to think. Guess I need to read it to get my own opinion, ha

LOL! Between homeschool and personal reading, I've got so many books on my bedside table that I have to be careful they don't fall off!!! I've got:

- my Bible, of course!

- "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis

- "A Father Who Keeps His Promises" by Dr. Scott Hahn

- "In Memory of A Saint - Lessons from My Mother I didn't Pay Attention to Until She Died" by my best childhood friend Sandra Elaine Scott. A very endearing book to me, especially, because I am blessed to have not only had such an extraordinary lifelong friend as Sandi, but to also have had the blessing of knowing her mother who, unbeknownst to Sandi until after the book was written, had shared many a phone call with me over the years, taking the time to counsel and impart her direct and loving motherly wisdom. Sandi's wonderfully candid memoir of her lifelong mother-daughter relationship ultimately results in the not-so-scarey, somewhat ironic revelation that despite what we think, deep down we truly are our mothers. As all mothers do, Mrs. Scott imparts her love and wisdom to Sandi in her own unique and sometimes quirky ways, oftentimes much to her daughter's chagrin. In time, however, Sandi ultimately experiences the unexpectedly heartwarming, life-affirming realization that the best of who she is just also happens to be the best of whom her mother has always been! Her personal insights and memories of her mother will have you laughing hysterically one moment, tearing up with pulled heartstrings the next, and ultimately calling your mother on the phone to thank her for all she has done for you. I love it, but I AM biased, having known these two incredible women since Sandi and I were just children! ;) You can find it anywhere - Amazon, BN.com, etc.) I am just so proud of her for having her book published!

- "The Old Farmer's Almanac 2012"

- "The End of the Present World, and the Mysteries of the Future Life" by Father Charles Arminjon

- "The Fathers of the Church" by Mike Aquilina (I really, really LOVE this book!)

- "Pocket Posh Sudoko 3"

- "The Rapture Trap" by Paul Thigpen (very thought provoking)

- "Greek Tragedies - Volume 3"

and

- "The Histories - Herodotus."

- "Financial Peace" - by Dave Ramsey (a new one - very easy to read, very informative).

And yes, if you're wondering, they're constantly teetering and in jeopardy of crashing to the floor; yes, I really am reading them all at once, and no, I'm not insane - I just don't sleep well at night, and books are much quieter and more richly entertaining than the television! LOL!

Nancy, I had not seen any of John Ortberg's books before. so I looked it up on Amazon. It certainly meets my way of thinking on things. I might have to put that one on my wishlist.

Let's see:

The Country Journal Book of Vegetable Gardening (Bubel)
The Liturgical Year (Chittister) (and a reflective journal)
When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box (Ortberg)

I really need to finish some of these!

Krystle, I got the Stitching Room and Outpost books recently too. I just love them. You have some serious reading on your side table!

Karen,
I do have a mule, and I would suspect that if the donkey were there first, the mule would work in okay. If it were the other way around, I would be a little cautious. My mule is the watchdog of the pasture. Nothing gets past her. In fact, she was wearing eau de skunk again the other morning, so I suspect she was in the process of shooing a skunk out of "her" pasture when things went bad.

Paula,

I haven't read any of the Nevada Barr books, but have a close friend who absolutely loves them. I will put them on my "to read" list. I discovered Ann Cleeves' books by accident. Red Bones is the third in that series. Cleeves lives in England, but she and her husband spent some time in the Shetland Islands where the books are based. I wrote to her on her website, telling her how much I enjoyed her first book and she sent me the nicest reply. So, now I am a big fan. Another wonderful author is Tracy Chevalier. I've enjoyed all of her books, but Remarkable Creatures is my favorite. She writes fiction that is based on real incidents and real people.

Paula, you must have a mule since you mentioned the mule book. I would love to have a mule. Do you think they get on well with donkeys?

Karen, I had to look up the Donkey Companion and Red Bones on Amazon. The Donkey Companion looks marvelous...I then looked for "The Mule Companion"...and found it! Cool! I'm always looking for a better way to communicate with my mule. Red Bones looks intriguing! Have you read any of the Nevada Barr books? I'm behind on all of her latest ones, but maybe I'll find some time to catch up.

I have a stack of books and magazines. The books are: The Donkey Companion by Sue Weaver; Red Bones by Ann Cleeves, and The Sexy Forever Recipe Bible by Suzanne Somers. Now that's quite a variety, isn't it? The magazines: Mary Jane's Farm (of course!!!); Bliss Victoria; Country Living, and The Agricultural Review.

No books on my bedside table, cuz I don't read there.
Now, my coffee table, my totebag and my car are entirely different matters!!!

But, my Bible is always #1 and used daily.
I try to find time to read other books but it's very limited. I always have MJFs magazine, Papercrafts, Scottish Life and Ireland of the Welcomes magazines handy and do read them when I can.

On the night stand is a book on Meditation, on the table in the living room (where I do most of my reading) is Psychic Living, Decorating and Engraving Glass, Hoodoo and Conjure Quarterly, Mary Jane's Farm, a few seed catalogs, a few hatchery catalogs, Mrs. Dunwoodys Homemakers Guide (or something like that), and my all time favorite The Old Farmer's Almanac.

We are having a long weekend due to the MLKJ Day holiday, and my stack has been growing all weekend. The problem is that I might get two pages read before I doze off, even if the book is riveting. I guess it makes for pleasant dreams!!

Hmm
How Soccer Explains the World
Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind
The Age of Shiva
Positively 4th St. (about Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Richard and Mimi Farina)
Alabama Stitch Book and Alabama Studio Style - Natalie Chanin
Just finished:
a visit from the goon squad - interesting but not engaging
Cleaving - same author as Julie and Julia, did not like it
Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight and Scribbling the Cat - Alexandra Fuller - really good - they are sending me in search of other books about Africa, just picked up 2 on Rwanda but they haven't made the bedside table yet.
Minding Frankie - new from Maeve Binchy - awesome as usual.
I read really fast so I usually go through at least 4 books a week. I'm always interested in what other farmgirls are reading. I have a stack of new (to me - purchased at thrift stores) cookbooks too but I try to keep them out of the bedroom:)

Melody: I love A Year in Provence! The Man of the House and I plan to spend some time there in the next few years, and would like to retire there.

Kris: Yay! Another Simple Abundance fan!

I always keep my favorite book--Precious Bane by Mary Webb--handy, so that's what's on my nightstand right now. Ordinarily there'd be more, but the Mister's stack is so tall I was nervous about adding to it!

I am also reading the Scottish Prisoner. I've read all of the Jamie/Claire books in the last few months and loved them. Like Melina, I am only reading little bits at a time so that it lasts. I have come to really care about these characters.

Amie, I read A Rose in Winter so many years ago during my romance novel reading years. Kathleen Woodiwiss was one of the first and one of the best writers of that genre.
