I love historical fiction from around the gold rush era in Northern California. One of my favorite books is "Daughter of Fortune." Any ideas?? Thanks! Lu

Not historical fiction, but all farmgirls should read The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love by Kristin Kimball

I second those Nancy Turner books, a dear dear friend sent all 3 to me about a year ago, and I know I will re-read them often, they are the kind of books that when you finish them, you are sad, cause you just want them to go on and on forever...

Hi, again, Amy Grace!
Those three Nancy Turner books, for me, were the best!!! I know I sound like a broken record, but I re-re-re-read those three books often. LOL

The Louis Lamour is Comstock Lode.
I third the Sandra Dallas and Nancy Turner recommendations - love both of those authors!

I second Prayers for Sale. The setting is a mountain community in Colorado...and the story is the timeless story of women and their complex relationships with others. This is one of my all-time-favorites. I've given several copies out as gifts.

It's not a book, but a really good short story is The Outcasts of Poker Flat. I think the author was Brett Hart.

I know Louis L'Amour has written about the gold rush in CA but I can't think of the title offhand. I just rememberd one--"Skagway", but it's about AK.

Anything about the Chilkoot trail might interest you. It's about the Klondike gold rush. I thought Rex Beach had written a book about it but "The Iron Trail" is about building a railroad to copper country in AK.

The trail is the thing.... Louis L'Amour

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, couldn't put it down; The Help, and Heaven is for Real are my most recent books that I am telling people about. Not really historic books but great reading! Also, any books by Debbie Macomber are great reading too.

Here are a couple suggestions from a bookseller in Michigan :)
1.Crown of dust by Mary Volmer- my historical fiction ladies raved about this one!
2.The floor of Heaven by Howard Blum - this is nonfiction, about the Yukon Gold Rush, but it's gotten great reviews

Happy Reading!

Oh goodie! I haven't read any of the suggestions, so I can't wait to get them! Thank you so much! You all are the greatest!! Warm hugs, Lu

Luzy: I have posted these three titles here before; they are my all time favorite books and I read them again and again and again.
"These Is My Words", "Sarah's Quilt", and "The Prayer Garden". The books follow each other in that order. The author is Nancy Turner.
I cannot brag enough about these books. If you haven't read them, please, read them. If you do read them, let me know what you think.
I know you will love them.

Robert Michner has several fictional books about our history, Texas, Centenial, and others whose names escape me right now....loved them all...
