Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit disorder
This is a new book that- believe it or not- I was able to rent through our Corporate Library. It was delivered to my desk today so I have not yet been able to read it. It is a nice thick book too- which makes me smile. I have long been a strong advocate that kids NEED outside time. They need to be able to get dirty, have adventures and smell fresh air.
I once saw a t-shirt that said "I went outside once but the graphics weren't as good" and I don't want that to be the mentality that my daughter has.
Has anyone read this book yet? Any reviews? I would love to get another farmgirl's opinion on it. I will be reading it at my desk in the coming weeks. :)

Oh this book is far from being new... I read this a number of years ago...gosh, maybe 8 years ago by now?? it's a great book and one of the driving forces behind why we went tv free!

We have two girls, four and two. Although it isn't pleasant we love that they actually start crying when we tell them we have to come in. The love camping although their dad and I find it much more exhausting we love that we are teaching them to enjoy their world. They also love "helping" in the flower and vegetable gardens during the summer. I have this book on my dresser but have a few I am working on already so it will come to the top of the stack soon.

I read this a while ago and since then I have noticed a number of things that never occurred to me. I live in the mountains and I have never seen a kid walk down the road or bike any where. You never see a child playing in a yard, you don't know who has children because of the number of toys in the yard. The school bus stopped about a mile up the road and I have never seen any one standing around to catch the bus, they are all sitting in cars in the morning and cars are lined up in the afternoon to take them home. My kids were never in the house except to sleep and eat. And now I realize they were never sick could there be a connection here? That book brings out some great points about the important of nature and its a shame that something so obvious needs to be brought to our attention.

It sounds like an interesting read. My sister who is a social worker has mentioned to me the large number of children she sees that have been (to coin a layperson phrase she uses) "spongebobbed". Really, she is refering to the brain disorder that is affecting kids that watch those kinds of shows and have said they "don't know how to turn their brain off". They have such short attention span and have serious difficulty in calming down, just can't seem to sort or process what is going on. They are missing out on the natural world, and only can relate to technological stimulation. It overwhelms them and wears them out without any physical activity. |

You will love this book if you haven't gotten around to reading it yet! There's also a more "grown-up" version about the need for nature in modern life. It's called The Nature Principle. Haven't read it yet, but I loved Last Child in the Woods so it's on my to-read list. I would like to give a copy of this book to every new parent!

Nora loves her outside time and I can't imagine it being able to let her play just like she does now. I must say our kids are lucky that we do value the outdoors. I cant imagine a childhood without animals and sunshine!

I have it. It's on my book reading list - I should bump it up on my reading list.
I work at our local school. They still have outdoor recess. I encourage kids to enjoy their time out there. You're stuck in a classroom all day, enjoy the fresh air! One kid told me, as he was sitting on the pavement in what will be the line to go in... "I'm more of a video game kind of kid, I don't like being outside."
Breaks my heart! I think I'm going to start the book today. I know my kids love to be outside. I can definitely see a change in their attitudes after a day or even a few hours of playing outside. Camping? An entire weekend spent outside is like prozac!

that book sounds interesting. i agree that kids should be outdoors. when i was a little girl i was always outdoors in the dirt, fussing with plants and i loved it.

The sad thing is, the people who read that book are not the ones that NEED to read it! We live a little in the country, on 3-5 acre plots. I walk my dogs twice a day. Several homes have very expensive play equiptment in the yard, but I never see kids outside. It's so sad to have these huge yards and trees to climb and creeks to play in but the kids are never out. You can see the TV is always on through the windows though.
I am a labor and delivery nurse, and every so often a couple will ask me for child rearing advice, and I always say, " Get rid of your TV". They think that is the dumbest idea they have ever heard. I do think that TV needs to be limited. A lot.
I'll get off my soap box, you all have a good day, I get to work in the Thrift store today! Treasures await!

Alee, I haven't had a chance to read this, but I sent my son a copy and he said it was very good. I had to drag him into the house when he was little and now his kids are the same way. TV is an occasional treat for them ( and then it's usually a video like Curious George or Veggie Tales), they much prefer being outside. They moved about two months ago to a home on the marsh in Virginia. Birds everywhere, deer and foxes in the yard, the kids are in heaven. I think you will enjoy the book.
