I am reading the Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover. I am excited to see his program as I have heard such good things about it. I am already almost 60 pages into it and just got it this morning through our inter-office mail system. I read it between calls at work today and get to use it as "extra credit" on my monthly review! YAY!

Anyway- So far I am liking what I am reading but I am really looking forward to getting down to the Nitty Gritty. The principles behind the program are great but what's the program? LOL Can you tell I am impatient much? LOL

Any one else reading the book? Thinking of or have read it?

Alee, usually churches will have programs that you can do his Money Makeover in-it's like a bible study kinda. I've heard lots of people that have had good results! I used Suze Orman's books and I now have NO debt. :)

He'll get more specific in the how-to in future chapters. His worksheets are helpful, too.

We went through the program a little over 10 years ago and have remained debt free (aside from the house mortgage) since then. It feels so good, so free, so stress-free. It was not easy and it took us a couple of years. Our family got so used to doing without stuff during that time that we just adopted that way of living....cash only, necessities only, and fun stuff periodically.

Blessings

Well I am a bit further in. Still haven't gotten to any usable advice. It has mostly been trying to convince you why debt it bad (Yes I agreed five pages in...can we get to the guidebook?) The stories are touching and I can see how the length leading up to the steps could be helpful if you were still on the fence- but I guess I would have liked that a little more broken up. I get discouraged if the promised advice isn't forth coming right away. I finally got to a chapter that mentions the $1000 emergency fund in the chapter title. I am half way through and they haven't mentioned it again yet. So I am hoping that it gets going soon.

It's a good book but I just was kindof ready for more of an instruction manual- less of a novel about his finance ideas.

Awesome book. The ideas he presents are clear. I recommend that everybody take a look at it.

DH and I took a Financial Peace class at our church Jan 2010. Fabulous system. I highly recommend taking it. It's all about taking baby steps to get out of debt, saving for retirement/kids college tuition/paying off your mortgage, then building wealth. It's a lifetime program, not a get rich quick program. He pretty much advocates a pay as you go method. If you don't have the money, you probably don't need what ever it is you are thinking of purchasing. He also recommends to cut your expenses to the bone (no cable TV, no dinners out, etc) until you pay off all of your debt (not including house). You pile all of your money into paying off your debt starting with the smallest credit card or loan balance you have. Once you pay that off you take that minimum payment and apply it towards the next cc/loan and so on until you are debt free. Once you're debt free then you start saving for retirement...He gives tons of financial advice about taxes, insurance etc. The program is very entertaining so if you have a chance to join it you should.

I have read TMM and also Financial Peace. I am finally able to take his class starting Sept 18 and am very excited to do it. I am lucky that I can listen to podcasts during the day at work and I listen to them in the morning and to Dave live on the radio in the afternoon. He does such a good job at keeping me real, reminding me what is important. Especially in this economy but also since we are a one paycheck family (mine) we really need to make smart choices with our money and not fly by the seat of our pants. I am hoping that we will be able to make a good budget we can live with.

God bless,

Judy

I have been thinking about reading it.
I used to enjoy listening to his radio show and am pleased that
we already do a lot of the things he suggests.
I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.

Best,
Karen
