I read this and was deeply saddened by it. This means no more bookstores near us, we will need to drive at least a hour or more depending on traffic to get to one.

My daughter has worked for Border's for nearly 10 years. One in Calif, then transferred to the one here.
It is a tough time for all. The employees at her store are like family with one another. Letting go is very difficult. They are in tears nearly every day. Many will stay in contact, they are friends for life. But it wont be the same at all.
The customers have become like greedy vultures and mean! Where was everyone before?
As for the corporate aspect, I agree how these larger stores just take out everyone, only to end up later on bankrupt themselves and Ceo's that tanked their companys walking off with millions in bonuses. It is very, very sad for the regular customers and the employees.
I will always want a book or magazine in my hand? Not sure I am ready for Everything to be computerized!

I am sad whenever I see any bookstore go out of business...mom and pop or a chain store. I do read digital books, but I love "real" books and bookstores are my favorite places. I agree that Borders had the best magazine selection. I will miss our local store.

I used to work at a Borders outside Philadelphia, and I'm sad to think that my old workplace will be no more. Last time I was down in that area some of my old managers were still at the store and others had been promoted to GM their own stores throughout the region. I'm sorry for their sakes. But at the same time, it's absolutely true that the company put thousands of small local bookstores out of business. What goes around sometimes comes around... |

I went to the one here this weekend at it was a madhouse! I did manage to get a few crochet books, a cute book on crafting with buttons, and a Storeys Basic Country Skills all for under 10 dollars. Most stuff was still expensive though.

yes I drove to Orlando mall last week thinking I would stop at Borders and they were closed down. Also the Walden book store in the mall was shut down and the Walden book store in Kissimmee was shut down. What a shame.

I think IF books are phased out, it will be a lot longer than people think. I know plenty of people who, like you Megan, are all about the book in print. I don't think I could read a whole book on a Kindle. Just not the same.
It's sad the stores are closing and that all the people will lose their jobs. That's a tragedy. But i do also agree with what Melina said about Borders (and Barnes and Noble, here) becoming over run with toys and games and other things. My kids (when younger) would always say "Can we go to Barnes and Noble?" and it was just because they wanted to look at all their toys.

The Borders near my mom's in California have been closing for awhile. It's really sad. I read an article that basically, due to the kindle, books will be "Phased out". Now, I love reading stuff online, but nothing replaces the feel of physically reading a book. Hearing the pages turn, seeing the ink splatters...

Both of the book bookstores in Wasilla have gone out of business. Luckily for me, Anchorage isnt too far away. But I do like going into a coozy bookstore. I'm sad now. :(

I feel sad for the employees but.....Borders managed to put lots and lots of Independent Mom and Pop bookstores out of business, including the one I worked in. So now i guess the shoe is on the other foot.
Please support independent bookstores whenever you can.

I'll miss my Borders, but I'm not surprised. In the last couple of years they have become more of a toy store than a book store. You have to wade through games, puzzles, key chains, yoga kits, guitar lesson kits, etc just to find the books. I'll miss the Seattle's Best coffee, but I have a couple used book stores I like better than Borders. I do feel bad for the folks who will be laid off.

So sad. My dh and I have used Borders as our "date place" for years. One Sunday a month we'll go, have coffee and read magazines. We can do the same at Barnes and Noble, but we have always liked Borders better. What a bummer.

One girl in my class works for the borders in town, it will no doubt be a tough time for all of the workers involved. I heard that some of the stores could be closing as soon as this friday.

Valerie~ I was saddened also when I read the news of the closings. We are lucky because we have a Borders close to us and right across the street is a Barnes and Noble - so I won't have the issue of travelling far to a bookstore. But I wil miss Borders - their magazine section was so much nicer than any other I have seen. I feel so badly for all of the people that will be losing their jobs. It just seems to be a horrible situation all around.

I guess they had been hoping for a seller which didn't pan out. I also read in another article that this may effect publishers as well, because some of them only had contracts with Borders.

Oh, I know - so awful! A couple of months ago we received an email from the head of Borders letting us know things were going to be, basically, "business as usual." They have been sending discount codes and coupons for weeks, too. Now they said something like 11,000 employees will be without jobs because of their closing. So sad. SO sad.
