Yes, it is November - National Novel Writing Month! Have you dreamed of writing a novel? Have you put off starting that great epic? Do you want to challenge yourself and have fun? Go to www.nanowrimo.org to sign up to begin your novel now! It is a crazy fun time to try to write 50,000 words in one month! There is also a section for the young people to write a novel too and for English teachers to work with kids to help them stay on target and write a novel. Next step is to edit. If you want to publish there is one heck of a process!!! Agents, editors, publishers, whew. I'm finishing up my trilogy and get to start that fun process again after the new year.

I don't know what I will do with the novel yet, but it did make me realize how much time (years) I have wasted not doing this.

Congratulations Kristina! Way to go!
And Jamie keep going if you're not there yet. Wherever you are in your novel, you can do it. I'm at 40,549 words as of last night and I intend to win this year after missing the mark last year. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement! It's a struggle when you have laundry to hang out, soup to put in the crock pot, snacks to bake etc. Plus housework, animals and other chores.

I'm doing it! Years ago, I was given the assignment, "Write something really awful." inorder to get unblocked. I'm looking at this the same way. I don't plan to make it awful, I hope & plan to make it work...but it's the exercise that counts for me this time! |

It's crazy time. I have a lot of writing friends that have participated, but I never had. I just plug along when I can, though lately, the edits are coming great after some good line edits from friend. I think to be able to really get a good push out of Nanowrimo, you need to have plotted your novel some and have a good handle on your characters. Since my first draft is always the discovery phase, that's a little harder. I'm still learning about my characters and some of them I've been with for three novels!
It is a great motivator and a deadline is amazing. The thing to remember if you do this is not to make yourself crazy and make sure your family is very supportive. As a fellow writer it is very easy to get drawn into your story to the exclusion of everything else and if you are pulling off 50,000 words in a month you are very focused. That's about 6 1/2 pages a day for 30 days, every day.
Now, have I scared you a bit? Don't let me. It's amazing. As I said, I know a lot of folks that participate every year. It's a great kick start. Writing is great, but then I'm biased as a novelist. If you think you have a story in you then write it. No excused, nothing about lack of time, just do it. Use nanowrimo as your starting point. If you don't do 6 1/2 pages a day, set a goal of one page a day for yourself or a set number of hours (mine is two when I'm crazy busy). If you do more, awesome. And give yourself a day or two off. It helps.
