I just read this gem by Cornelia Nixon in less than 2 days. It is fiction based on actual events of the author's ancestors in Maryland in the time after the Civil War. It eloquently deals with Unionist/Rebel divides within families who live on the border of the Mason-Dixon line, racism, slavery, patronistic social convention, and scandal, all revolving around a feisty "spinster" in her late 20s and her betrothed, a mostly decent man who usually takes the moral high road-except when he most should-and the fallout that ensues. Highly recommeded.
