I just finished a children's/young adult book called "Caddie Woodlawn" by Carol Ryrie Brink. It is based on the childhood of the author's grandmother who lived in Wisconsin in the 1860's - it is a really good read, and if you like the Little House books you would enjoy this one. Carol Ryrie Brink has written other books, for both children and adults, too - one that was set in Moscow, ID in the frontier days called Buffalo Coat that is on my list of books worthy to reread.

Thanks Amy Grace for the info, I am always looking for books similar to Little House. I love the books and shows on tv - cant get enough of Little House. I will certainly look up Caddie Woodlawn. I am reading some now from the Janette Oke series and they are good also.

I read Caddie Woodlawn about a million times as a kid, between Little House, Anne of Green Gables and Nancy Drew rereads. It is a wonderful book. My daughter loved it, too. I love being able to introduce her to the books I loved.

I think "Caddie Woodlawn" was read to my class when I was in elementary school.
