Just finished listening to audio version of this book (read by the author) and heartily recommend it. Thanks to those on this site who recommended it -- it is excellent.

Lilly (the author's grandmother) was a true-blue strong woman. The story is quite humorous in parts, too.

Read both these books----the first Half
Broke Horses was my favorite........I found the other very sad.......I felt so bad for the kids.....tough tough life for them.....but they came out stronger in the end.

Marly,

It is the story of the author's grandmother who was a very colorful woman to say the least.[:

She was born at the turn of the century on a western farm. Her father was always looking for the newest thing to do to turn a profit and ended up losing his shirt, usually. However the best part of the story is her life, from marrying a bigamist while young and striking out on her own in Chicago to moonshining for extra cash to feed her two children to persevering until she received her teaching degree. This doesn't begin to tell her story. It is a combination of wild, crazy lady, hard work, creativity, making do and ambition. If you like stories about gritty, hardworking people, you'll enjoy this one.

Happy reading,
Judy

I loved both these books too - and I agree Lindsay, I think that would be better to read Half Broke Horses first, I did it the other way too:)

The sequel is called "The Glass Castle", although it was actually written before this book. I read it first, but wish I had waited until I read "Half-Broke Horses" because it would have been nice to know where the author was coming from. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although it is a bit heavier in subject matter. It would be classified as a memoir, not fiction like this book is.

Judy:
Can you tell me a little about the book, "Half-Broke Horses". Sounds good.
Thanks.

There is a sequel too, can't remember the name right now, but I hear it is even better. I read this one in book form and enjoyed it. It had photos in it, too, which was nice to see the folks who were being written about.
